I believe the direction you are aiming is indicated by the arc beneath the character. Different attacks have different range, but they always go off in the general direction of the arc.
For instance, the Wizards giant AOE Fireball has a fixed range, so you cannot aim it other than the direction. Which means positioning will be a factor.

The Wizard will be a bit trickier because they're making us clack keys 1,2, and 3 in various combinations to choose the spells, rather than just keys 1-9.
And of course this thread will be on page 19 by tomorrow, and someone else will post tomorrow asking, "HEY, what's the mouse and keyboard controls look like!" *sigh* If they stickied like 10 of the most helpful answer-posts, it would save everyone a lot of searching and redundancy.
