Could this game be played with arcade controls?
Hey guys,

I currently don't own this game, but it's on my wishlist.

What I'd really like to know is if this game, in multiplayer, would work when installed on a PC housed in an arcade cabinet, without a mouse and keyboard other than the mapped keys -> arcade switches.

The original 2 Gauntlet games had 2 buttons, while Legends and Dark Legacy had 3, with a couple button combos. I currently have 7 buttons for the first two (center players) and 4 buttons for the next two (outer), plus a "coin" and "start" button that aren't really part of the main control area. They all have a single analog/USB joystick as well (Ultimarc Ultrastik 360).

Will these controls be adequate for a 4-player game?

I use the controller setup for all characters: 2 joysticks + 3 buttons is what you need. each character will use the joysticks+buttons differently however.

not completely sure how that maps to m+k setup.

You will probably need to use macros, either to have your single analog send input as if it were two analogs, or to have a button that toggles whether the analog is being used for moving or aiming.

You would sacrifice a bit since the archer uses a dual stick configuration. That said, If you had six buttons and a joystick for each player, I believe it could work in theory. But yes, you'd probably be looking at running mapping software and setting your buttons up like keyboard inputs. It may take a bit more research, but I would be willing to say you can do it.

I would say it's definitely doable, but will it be worth it or efficient or effective for gameplay in a Mame style cabinet? Probably not. If it was a dual stick setup (Smash TV, Total Carnage, etc.) and you had sticks that had buttons on them that would work. I don't think it would be feasable to manipulate dual arcade joysticks and multiple buttons at the same time as you'd have to let go of the stick to press buttons which is not an issue on a controller.
