Gauntlet™
Best Gauntlet Game?
My all time favorite was Gauntlet Dark Legacy, sure it hasn't aged well but it has a ton of outfits and unlockable characters, the announcer and music was great, and the multiplayer was a blast.

Dark Legacy, while I can see people mixed about it then (like Darkening Demise said, it's an expansion) but its' THE Gauntlet to play with 8 memorable characters, many worlds to explore, monsters to fight, crazy as hell items, and with new additons that add a bit more depht while still being a simple enough game to make it an excellent multiplayer experience. If we're talking something a bit older, Gauntlet II improves nearly everything, new monsters, new items, and the option to play as the same player.
17 if you count the unlockable ones, all of which are just reskins, and sumner who is just bragging rights
Gauntlet 1 and Gauntlet 2
I'm another vote for the Mega Drive version. I pulled a 40 hour marathon in that game, playing Arcade Mode until I ran out of credits for all 4 classes.

It would be great to have this version as a bonus because of all the modes. Or even just as a new game for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive collection on Steam.

get MAME 32 or 64 (depends on your OS) and get the rom. You could be playing Arcade perfect Gauntlet in seconds. romnation.net has legal free roms.

Gauntlet 1 & 2 were epiphanies. In the age of donkey kong and pac man, it was the first fantasy RPG and told you that were games were going "we don't need roads!":wololo:
No such thing as legal ROMs, and piracy sucks. Also not a fan of emulation, for that matter. Just not going to find a cart now.

oh no if you download the Gauntlet rom you will be taking so many quarters away from the arcade. Poor Ed Logg, his pension will be so tiny because we played his masterpiece on an emulator.

There are legal roms available for many emulators, just google it (sorry to use that phrase). Even if they are not legal downloading them and playing them 30 years after the fact will do no one any harm.

those rom sites keep those ancient games alive and it is a very important part of the history of popular culture. Gauntlet was phenominal at the time. The attract mode on the arcade caught your attention as you walked in. The deep, haunting music and coop game play were totally fresh. I just hope these devs know what they are doing.

Whatever you think of it, it just isn't legal. That is the point.

I also still hate emulation. So eh.
Dark legacy was the best! Very well done in EVERY aspect. Can't think of a single downside(graphics were fair for the time and style)

only one I can think of is unlockable characters not changing in looks every 10 levels, not terribly important but every time you got another 10 levels, a new title, and looked badass you felt badass.

EDIT: otherwise I wholeheartedly agree

I had no idea the later games had a lot of fans. I played Dark Legacy a bit and I found it close to the originals when it came to gameplay, they even tried to mimic the voice.
This is one of those questions that greatly relates to "when did you come in?". I came in when 1 and 2 reigned supreme. I also remember the obscure "Gauntlet III" that used isometric view and boosted a movielike coverart (back when coverart was art).

As you can imagime my favourite is Gauntlet 1.
gauntlet 4 for the sega genesis hands down
