Best Gauntlet Game?
My all time favorite was Gauntlet Dark Legacy, sure it hasn't aged well but it has a ton of outfits and unlockable characters, the announcer and music was great, and the multiplayer was a blast.

What was your favorite Gauntlet game?

Honestly, I'd be more excited if they just ported in the old games and gave them online multiplayer. But since that's probably never going to happen, we can just hope and pray that this will suffice.

While I loved the old Gauntlet I & II in the arcades, my favorite was actually Gauntlet Legends that saved your character progress/profile so I could return to the arcade every week or so and pick up where I left off... the gameplay was very much the same as previous installments but added more in-depth character progression (want to say there was another fantasy arcade game around the same time which was very similar).

Ahh me too! I had started with the Arcade machines but once they migrated to consoles I was so happy. I wouldn't have to shell out quarters like a slot machine anymore! I honestly think Gauntlet 4 did the RPG aspect much better than Dark Legacy. Don't get me wrong, Dark Legacy was fun but I don't classify it as a Gauntlet game...it was waaay to easy.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this game. Hopefully as it gets closer to launch we can see some genuine gameplay and get a better picture of it. So far it looks likes sticking with the older games is a better choice.

I have to go with Guantlet 4, on the Sege Genesis. It was the first Gauntlet to really have a lot of RPG elements, character customizing, equipment. There were theifs that might steal your stuff and you must work to get it back, shops, treasure was more than just points or exp to increase max hp. You could choose to do a melee attack or throwing attack. When you killed a Dragon, you felt good about it. Puzzles to solve that were more puzzlish. You had a quest to accomplish, killing the 4 Dragons of each element to find the great treasure which presented you with a moral question at the end of it all. Have to think about how far into a dungeons you are going because going too far too fast might make it too hard to get out, if you need to refill health. Some puzzles required multiple floors to figure out but weren't stupid about it. They were simple enough to keep the flow going...

Ahh those were fun times. ^_^

Arcade 4 player version is stil my #1 but for home console Gauntlet 4 wins hands down the N64 version that the later versions were based on was good but it didn't have that Guantlet arcade feel.

Gauntlet 4 was basically the arcade with the added bonus of a compelling RPG element too. Deffo a worthy port. If the devs can bring back the magic of the arcade. Lots of narrow corridoors and plenty of treasure and food. I'll be a happy chappy

*steals your food* "I SO HAPPY FOR YOU!" man that never gets old lol

Not sure why you say it is like the arcade game. It's distinctly different.
Niall May 24, 2014 @ 4:45am
Gauntlet 4 is exactly like the arcade. Except it has a battle mode and an RPG mode as well as default Arcade mode. The thing about Gauntlet 4 is they kept the same mechanics of the arcade. unlike the crappy NES ports.

I think most of us are talking about the RPG mode, and not the arcade portion you're talking about.

You got my attention with your reply Lucifer.
Did the arcade machine save your profile or was there a card (transferable NEO GEO style?) that you used... 'cause that sounds awesome.

Btw LIMB: we may be older now and we lived through the birth of gaming til today. We have been blessed!!! :-P but Life is getting better for us gamers... wouldnt change any thing of my real life gaming profile! ;-) IDDQD

I've only played Dark Legacy and Seven Sorrows (which I didn't really care for), so I'll have to go with DL. I thought that the original arcade game looked pretty interesting, but never had much of a chance to actually try it out.

For me it was Gauntlet Legend. It was so awesome, and it was in 3d! It was also my first Gauntlet game. There was always a crowd around it at my arcade, that arcade closed down not long after they got it but later I found one at a local pizza parlor. I feel like I never got to play enough of it.

Legends and Dark Legacy (DL was just an expansion of the original Legends)
HansGonk Jun 9, 2014 @ 7:42pm
Dark Legacy, while I can see people mixed about it then (like Darkening Demise said, it's an expansion) but its' THE Gauntlet to play with 8 memorable characters, many worlds to explore, monsters to fight, crazy as hell items, and with new additons that add a bit more depht while still being a simple enough game to make it an excellent multiplayer experience. If we're talking something a bit older, Gauntlet II improves nearly everything, new monsters, new items, and the option to play as the same player.
