Nox has a Gauntlet mode called "Quest". It's an oldy, but the art is very good for 2D and the gameplay is top notch. Like in this Gauntlet, the Wizard is more complicated than the other classes. Nox also has a well done loot system which doesn't intrude on the gameplay much. Multiplayer still works too.

Hammerwatch. In fact it is even more close to the original Gauntlet.
Plus it got more content, more variety, more secrets, workshop, level editor and other.

Not played it myself, but I thought Helldivers looked similar in gameplay albeit set in space. It's also an Arrowhead game like Gauntlet.

During the holiday sale you'll likely be able to pick up Hammerwatch for under $2. I think I paid $7 for a 4-Pack. Helldivers is another Arrowhead game and in many ways shares commonalities with Gauntlet. But the gameplay is much more hectic and the controls are definitely tougher to master, esp the "video game cheat code" sequences you use to activate items. I don't like that part already because the D-Pads on XBOX 360 controllers are atrocious so I can't execute the codes fast like I could with an old NES, SNES, Genesis, or even PSX controller when playing said old games.

I'm hoping my Microsoft rep will throw me a XB Elite controller to try out in the coming days. But Helldivers is definitely fun. I need to dive in more but have been playing mostly RB6 Siege and Fallout 4.

I definitely don't find it as fun as Gauntlet, but I still like it and will dig in more when I have time. But there are so many really good games coming out this holiday season!

Hammerwatch was just tediously dull compared to Gauntlet.

Honestly, i don´t like Gauntlet but that is maybe because i am a Vertean of the 80s classic and i expected something different from the new one, than what it became. Helldivers on the other hand... just love it. Saw it and knew immediately that i would like to play it. Bought it and love it even more.

Hammerwatch is a good game (pick up the planks!! (trust me)).
NOX is too, although I`ve not tried that mode.

Torchlight I & II (preferably modded) if you`ve not tried them. Much larger games from what I recall too :D

Forced is a couple years old and not that different. When it's on sale you can usually pick it up for $5 or so.

If you like pvp, you could also try Magicka Wizard Wars.
Warning, it is a very high learning curve & very fast paced (except for souls maps.).

But, there are Clans that will help train players that can be found on the Paradox forums & via steam, plus plenty of tips on youtube too.

Bonus, it is free to play.

Stick with it, once learnt, it is faaaaaaaar too addictive.

Dungeons and Dragons this feels almost like Gauntled but it is a Beat'em up it also remember Final fight and Streets of Rage it come out from arcades there is 2 games in 1,The fist has 4 classes to choose Warrior,Cleric, Elf and Dwarf and the second 6 classes with Wizard and Thief.Take a look it is on sale too. http://store.steampowered.com/app/229480

You can co-op at four, but you can clear it solo or duet or whatever.
