Could be a couple issues going on here...
1: The type of xbox controller you are using is not compatible whatsoever.
2: Gauntlet uses XInput. Check the bottom of your controller to make sure the switch is XInput and not Direct Input.
3: Sometimes there are issues with the controller being recognized due to Window prioritization. In this case, you might see a keyboard on the right and a gamepad on the left. Nothing you do with the gamepad will work but there is a mouse on the screen. Need to click the gamepad graphic. Sometimes on the bottom left is a button which says Controller. Again this needs to be chosen by the mouse.
4: If you are trying to play the game on one monitor and do stuff on the other. Again, maybe there is an issue. Try single monitor to rule out that.
5: If the game is not in full screen, there is that Windows issue I mentioned. You will see other programs on your bottom bar. Select Gauntlet and it should go full screen.
6: Open your Control Panel. Select Hardwdare and Devices. You Should see an option for your Controller in the list, if the controller is plugged in. If the controller is not there it means the computer is not recognising it. Try a different USB port.
Not sure which windows you have... swipe from the right side of the screen to bring up the side menu. In the search thing type joy.cpl and hit enter. It will pop up a window showing your controller. This will at least let you know if it is recognised by the computer.
At this stage, we don't even know if the computer knows it is there. So try that, and then double check input method on the bottom of the controller.
If Windows is not recognising the controller you will need to download the drivers for the controller - they are free. Assuming the controller didn't say "Windows Ready" or something and didn't come with a Driver CD.
