I guess stupidly I can't buy it now. Really how hard would it be....in the original they were not walking blobs of glowing lights they had different coloured clothes which makes more sense.
I remember that the last time I wanted to buy it was like a year ago, but there was this ruckus about the slayer update which polarized the community. Re-editions today are mostly about targeting a new audience, like different platform or next console...often cutting corners, so it isn't always positive change for everyone. The game seems to be left adrift for those good 12months now, Arrowhead moved to different projects and if there is anything to be fixed, implemented or balanced, I have not much hopes of seeing it someday. Or is it really using all its potential already?
Btw, my favourite gauntlet-like is Hammerwatch! I think I still have one extra copy left.
I never seen Hammerwatch but I will check it out. The game seems to be balanced to me. The endless mode appears to randomize the dungeon layout somewhat. The relics you can level up, which make it kind of interesting. You can summon whirlwinds to blow away enemies, have fire boots, etc. I don't think Arrowhead lost interest, but moreso that Warner Bros decided not to invest anymore time/money in the game. Plus, WB was pulling the strings behind the scene which is why the game developed from the originial concept which people liked that was more fan based to a different type of Gauntlet, which was less grindy, family-friendly graphics and simplified.
WB likes their flagship Batman, DC Comics and Mortal Kombat titles. They also have many lego titles and are considered a family company. Gauntlet doesn't really fit their corporate profile of entertainment, so they got rid of it. Sure, they will sell it for a coin and its polished enough that its not glitchy. However, you will note that you can turn off the gore aspects of the game.
I'm such a huge fan that any Gauntlet game was produced during this decade, I am willing to forgive alot. I owned an original two player arcade cabinet as well as gauntlet legends, so I am biased.
To me, this also seemed somewhat simplified/casualized and console/kids-friendly to the boot, which is a slight bumma - I don't understand why it has Mature rating (compares almost to the Torchlight in some enemy designs and visuals). However Mortal kombat does sound like anything but family-friendly game to me, judging from the classic trilogy (unless they made some posh meek new edition or so, I don't follow any franchises and license handlings much).
Maybe if they rebundle Gauntlet later this year, I might give it a shot eventually to see for myself at least how far the apple fell from the tree, or what it could have been... Cheers again!
