Hello.
I'd recommend The Hollow Chapters book plus Ring of Mirrors for the relic. Why this? The Ring of Mirrors is for easy kills. The book, though, with it you could do this combo:
· Vacuum (you could slow enemies first by Dark Torrent), Flash Freeze and then Burning Bolt, Fire Serpents or Flaming Mortar
Anyway, though this won't let you shield yourself with Static Sphere, it does come with Invicibility.
Now, for the talisman, I suggest the Merlin's Bookmark (Arcane Blast) if you're getting used to the combo mentioned or simply want to have something for offense or defense. My preference, though, would be the Active Magicite since with it you turn enemies into gold plus receive gold. Beware, though, as gold can distract you and/or your allies.
(Update: Changed some terms to what they're officially called.)
It's the play style, man. I bet, much like how I do, Wizard users also consider circumstances. For instance, if enemies aren't focused on you and you've got the chance to freeze them then it's Orb of Winter first then Flaming Mortar since they're slowed. Same situation, if there are enemies behind you add Static Sphere or Thunderburst to the mix to cover yourself or push enemies back, respectively.
Unlike the rest, including the Necromancer, the Wizard is slow. It's like he's gliding or something.
· By the way, using The Hollow Chapters, you can do a Fire Serpents into the middle of a crowd of enemies and then Vacuum (plus Flash Freeze, if possible).
(Update: Changed some terms to what they're officially called.)
Dark Torrent > Vacuum > Flash Freeze > (optional: Fire Serpents) > Flaming Mortar
Let me elaborate:
1. Dark Torrent: this is your main tool for crowd control. All enemies slow down allowing Merlin to "kite" the enemies into whatever position you want. Use this to position yourself in the center of a monster cluster and follow with step 2.
2. Vacuum: this is like a mini black hole for Merlin. All enemies near him will get attracted and get together in one spot. Just make sure you move Merlin while doing this move to avoid getting surrounded by the same enemies you pulled. After executing, all enemies pulled get stun by 1 second so it's a pretty safe move to pull. :)
3. Flash Freeze: Ok. So you got your enemies in one spot, what do you do next before they attack you? You freeze them! That'll give you enough time to think of something to kill them!
4. Flaming Mortar: the mortar has a fixed distance and it won't kill anything that is too close to you. So, you have to make some distance before using it. If succesful, this will kill all low level monsters in one move. Since you need to create the distance, you also can use the Fire Serpents. Not only they will burn the enemies now trapped under the ice but it'll give the perfect distance to use the mortar and finish them off.
Another good tool with Merlin's 3rd weapon (The Hollow Chapters) is the invisibility. If you are soloing, this move will give you time to escape a tough spot, and think about your next strategy. I use it all the time after the Ring of Mirrors to help me with the cooldown of the ring and use it again.
Hope all this helps! Good luck! :)
I don't think Wizard works that way. Single attack, that is. Merlin really takes advantage of three elements. It takes getting used to but give it a chance and maybe the Wizard would become one of your favorites.
If you're going for fire first plus fire/channeling, ice/demon, lightning/void alone... it may be difficult to survive, friend. Sorry.
But wait. There is something that may be easy to master and that's Endritch's Mystic Sphere, Channeling School, since it REPLACES FIRE. Here's a simple setup:
· Storm Barrage (fire + lightning) first for damaging shield, Repeater Bolts (fire + fire) for offense and then Rift Jump (fire + ice) to escape.
