Help: 1-5 fps on decent system
I have a decent PC and thought I would pick up Gauntlet on sale to play with some friends.

I am getting 20 FPS in the main menu. When I join a lobby it drops to 10. I can hardly select a character. And once the game starts, it drops down to 1-5 FPS.

I've disabled all options in the display menu, put setting on low, used the lowest resolution, even used the config file to use 640 resolution. Nothing helps or changes the FPS one bit.

I even used the Nvidia control panel to optimize the 3D settings on a single monitor and power consumption.

I installed on a solid state HDD initially than moved to a disk drive, just in case.

I am using the latest graphics driver available. I do not know what else to do at this point but return the game and go cry in a corner.

Any ideas?

Specs;
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
Intel Core I7-3770 Quad Core @ 3.4GHz
16GB RAM
Nvidia GTX 1070

Sounds really wierd and shouldn't have any issues running this game as I even tested this on a older laptop I had laying around. There's no reason your computer should be having performance problems with this game.

I would simply set the game to all default settings and remove any outsides changes from Nvidia Control Panel. Keeping everything "stock" as possible to rule out any outside changes interfering with the game.

I'm curious, try checking that Windows 10 supports DX9 correctly with no missing files by running the "DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer" from Microsoft's website. I have heard issues with some DX9 games no longer working properly under Windows10 from various users. My theory is Microsoft saw it as an afterthought since it is "legacy" software.

I did try the default settings all around initially prior to the troubleshooting and did again at the very end. Reset the game settings and Nvidia. There was never any change to my FPS at any point in changing any of the settings. Max or min settings.

I tried installing DX9 but the installed stalled stating that the software was already installed.

Its also worth mentioned that I have this issue with one other game. Zombie Army Trilogy. Another game that should have no issue but my frame rate is crap no matter what I change in the settings.

Literally every other game in my library runs great.

Isn't the game attempting to run on the intel hd graphic chip by any chance? Some games have strange preferences with graphic adapters. Other than that, it can also be driver/directx/compatibility issue as already mentioned... You can try to re-run all the redistributables that ship with the game (usually located in the game folder as _commonredist), give it a reboot and try again.

I'm still thinking whether to buy the game this time or not, because when the slayer edition update arrived, I've heard quite a lot of criticism towards it and that put me off the purchase.

looks like hardware problem to me, memory leak from graphics card maybe.

Yea it sounds to me like some configuration keeps selecting Intel as the primary graphics accelerator. That's why I asked the OP about default settings, but something isn't right since Zombie Army Trilogy (another DX9 game) isn't working properly.

IDK saw this guide, but I don't have a Nvidia gpu to check this. Also maybe "Running as Admin" just for ♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles.

Also Spectrum Legacy, any negative "criticism" of the game aren't based on solid arguement. It's mainly some individuals with loud noise which exists in every game here on Steam. For $5 on sale, this game is a steal. There were some people like me who played the game when it was released and the "Slayer Edition" brought some great changes with a few changes people were used to. Mainly people who never even played the game before, return to play and notice some of the "bonuses" were removed. Which is great IMO, because those "bonuses" made the game easier and less of a reason for people to keep grinding. The challenge is still to grind in "Endless Mode" for leaderboards if you care.

My system doesn't have the Intel HD graphics drivers, so that shouldn't be an issue. I opened the Nvidia control panel and went to manage 3d applications. Went to Gauntlet.exe and saw it was indeed set to the GTX 1070. I than went through and set every setting to performance setting or off such as shaders, caching, vsync, etc. This has no impact on performance at all.

I than went to the DX9 installer under the common redistributable folders and reinstalled DX9. The installation went through and completed, still no impact on the framerate.

At this point, ready to return my $5 game, I reset all my Nvidia setting back to default, and decided to reboot real quick. After the reboot, The game is running at 120 FPS.

I am not sure whether it was reinstalling DX9 or simply the reboot, but its working now. *Fistpump

Thank you all for your suggestions and help! You are all much appreciated! Beers on me next time you visit North Idaho/Eastern WA.... lol.

Same issues. Using a 680 GTX, run everything perfectly fine. This game, however, runs at 5 fps. Unsure why.

Quick update; I simply upgraded my drivers just now. Instant fix. Hope you get it fixed up, OP.

I picked this game back up to stream a few days ago, and it was flawless. I played with two other people in which the game worked for them, but one of my friends was getting this lag issue. He returned the game in a fury.

Today, I turned the game back on to play, and I'm getting the lag issues I'm seeing all over the place. Nothing has changed. No settings were changed.

Like...wtf. How does a game go from working flawlessly to suddenly crapping out a few days later?

You're not clear. Are you saying in the online multiplayer as a host or a peer? This game doesn't have servers, it's supported by peer-to-peer. So if you are always connecting to another player who is hosting the game via China or Brazil, you will have a high "ping" causing you to skip(characters all over).
This is unacceptable

i7 6700
32gig ram
1080GTX

After 5 levels, game turns to ♥♥♥♥. Fps drops to 1(yes i'm being sarcastic). Can't do ♥♥♥♥. Need to restart.

Meanwhile DOOM runs on high everything

I don't need a fix by turning graphics down, what's going on here.

GPU/Audio drivers current

As I said before, reinstalling DX9 from the redistributable folder for Gauntlet (D:\Programs\Steam\steamapps\common\Gauntlet\_CommonRedist) and than rebooting my PC fixed my issue.

Changing game settings had no effect at all.

So I am all good now. Problem resolved.

I would recommend following those steps for anyone still having issues. Also, WB support is still responding to tickets on this game. If you are having these issues and my fix doesn't work for you, I'd recommend contacting WB support and providing them with a DxDiag file so they can assist you.

- Press the Windows Key and the R key on your keyboard to bring up the "Run" box.
- In the "Run" box, type in DxDiag.
- Press Enter. This will start the DxDiag utility.
- Once the DirectX Diagnostic Tool appears, click on the Save All Information button at the bottom.
- When asked to where save the file to, click on the drop-down box next to Save in and select Desktop.
- In File Name box towards the bottom, then name DxDiag.txt should appear. Leave this as is and click on the OK button.
- Click the Exit button to exit the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
- On the Desktop, there should be a file name DxDiag or DxDiag.txt. If there is no file with this name, please repeat the steps above and make sure to save the file to the Desktop.
- Open support ticket and attach this file at wbgames.com

With hardware that solid, I think you should turn up your graphics to maximum settings and VSYNC. Could be a problem with your do as display/monitor.
I turned everything back to high, i did the dx9 thing. nothing. I sent in a ticket to wb
