Problem with HOI3 - TFH

I was playing HOI3, i upgrade to Semper FI, everything was great. Now upgrade to TFH. I cannot start the game. You know this is not my job to find that solution. Several players mention that is a problem. SO find a solution. WE PAY and we need a solution. I DONT KNOW, contact or may compains, make a patch, or please return me my money. This is not fair, i trust STEAM and buy games. But without you test everything why you sell. I will wait for a reply. Thanks a lot

Have you tried launching the game directly? As in going to
"Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Hearts of Iron 3" and launching HOI3game.exe
That might work if your having a problem with the launcher

These are just generic fixes ive encountered, nothing specific for HOI3 or your problem.

Some times this annoys me. i don't like paying for whats basically a patch. and then it dosen't work.

I strongly agree with Sellinois, this software is a piece of crap, wouldn't even qualify for prealpha in another company but paradox. Paradox must hire the most inept unqualified programmers in the industry and i refuse to ever spend any money on their products again. I demand my money back. Do not buy this unless you enjoy shredding your money and making it useless, you've been warned.

Hi. Same problem for me. Installing HOI3 on a new PC, having previously purchased HOI3 originally as well as SF, FTM and then TFH all on that PC. Steam supposedly installed correctly on this new PC and it looks like HOI3 has, but when I click to start the game from within the Steam launcher, it just drops back to the desktop. I tried the install/reinstall of the Netfx64 and vcredist_x64 as suggested above, and now if I try and launch the game using any of the HOIxxx.exe's I get a message saying 'The program can't start becuase d3dx9_42.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."
I too don't quite get the suggestion from Xander above to do an uninstall and reinstall...If I try uninstalling from within Win7 Control Panel I get a Steam message asking if I want to delete all game content, and that if I do I will have to download it again. Won't downloading again just trigger the same failed/wrong order installation process again also?

I'm having the same issue. I try to start the game, the selection menu comes up, I select any one of the three (FTM, Semper Fi, or TFH), it takes me to the patcher, I click on play and nothing happens. I've tried re-installing the game. I've tried running the 64bit net installer, tried re-installing direct x, and vccred 64 bit, and still nothing.

I can't believe this has been up this long, and nobody has a resolution yet.

I start the game and it plays Ride of the Valkyries, etc. But when it gets to the pic. of the German infantry guy and says "initialising map" the screen goes black and it says and error occurred...send error report to microsoft or don't send, I don't send and it takes me back to steam. (why don't they spell "initializing" right?)

I had the same thing happening when I was trying to get it to work with Impulse. I went to paradox's support forum (here: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?612732-Hearts-of-Iron-3-Known-issues-fixes-workarounds-etc.-Megathread.) and followed most of their instructions for various problems. Could not get it to work with Impulse, but downloaded from Steam and it worked just fine.

Mine just refuses to work. I dont know enough about hardware to tell really, but it "feels" to me like its a problem with the downloader or the package that gets downloaded, and possibly only around TFH. In my case I have a WinXP desktop that has had each of the HOI elements downlaoded in turn - from HOI 1.2 I think originally to 1.4 and SF to FTM to TFH - all no problems. In the past couple of weeks I have been trying to get it to work on my Win7 Enterprise Lenovo laptop and tried everything - probably much as kwkrnu72 has done. Tried reinstalling twice, tried the C++ redistributable in different incarnations, tried reverting or updating my Direct X (which is at the latest 11 rlease according to dxdiag), uninstalling and reinstalling the .Net framework, etc. Got every HOI-related exe I can find in the NVidia Control Panel 'Manage 3d Settings'. All to no avail. I am a bit wary of trying to update drivers - according to the Lenovo website I have the latest certified driver versions for the machine's NVS 4200M video card and I dont want to risk screwing up the system as this is my work laptop.

OMG I got it to work.

I followed my nose through a series of hunches and websites, and came up with the following:

- When I tried to run the game direcxtly using HOI3_tfh.exe, I got the message telling me a dll was missing. A simple search on the internet told that this is a typical DirectX missing dll, so I (re-?)installed DirectX using this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a.
- That got me to a new error: "MSVCR100.dll is missing", so at least I was maybe getting somewhere. My friend google then led me to some posts from which I installed the C++ Redistributable 2010, advised in one forum post I found by doing the x86 version first (this link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555) then the x64 one after that (this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3).

Note the '2010' reference above there because I *think* that the 2005 redistibutables were the ones actually put into the 'install' directory under my Steam installation, and that I had previously attempted to re-run...Certainly, having just started the 'vcresdit_x86' in the Install folder it says its the 2005 SP1 version...

But in any event, VOILA - problem solved. I havent run the game yet for any length of time - just started, went into the 1936 scenario and started a new one as a random country (France) and everything fired as expected. Happy camper so far:).

HOI3 - TFH does not start
I have bought Hoi3 +Semper Fi +FtM +TFH. I can open it but when I press Start HOI3, the startup window simply closes and i fail to open HOI3 TFH. Any help?

I'm sure he's being waiting with bated breath for that gem over the several years and 100's of game hours since he made that post.
