MagiXX is correct I'm afraid. Vanilla Dies Irae: Götterdämmerung is incompatiable with For the Motherland.
As stated on the report thread, it requires versions 2.04d-f to work, which of course are Semper Fi patches hugely outdated by For the Motherland (Version 3.05).
Luckily there is an extremely unstable betapatch available for FTM and DiG, which works with version 3.05. This can be found here:
http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?536069-Dies-Irae-G%F6tterd%E4mmerung-Report-thread&p=12374618&viewfull=1#post12374618
Installing that you enable you to play DiG, but please note that full technical support for the two 'Dies Irae' DLCs is unavailable and a stable patch for FTM is unlikely to come out soon.
The reason for this is that the two DLCs are solely the work of Devildread and Danevang. (Whom are, honestly, simply great contributers to the modding community whom Paradox has paid generously for the right to publish their mods for profit).
Of course this means that responsibility for Di:G and Di:SS falls back to these two characters, whom are understandably relatively unwilling to maintain compatiability with the ever changing versions of HoI when it would require hours and hours of work. They have quite openly stated that they are far more willing to make new DLCs then to rework old ones.
For example Stars and Stripes was always designed with FTM in mind, therefore it is compatiable, but please consider that 'Their Finest Hour' is being released on the 26th September so if you DO buy Di:SS then the DLC is not going to be compatiable with TFH and it will be a very long time, if ever, that a patch for the DLC and latest expansion comes out.
Ultimately this is a shame for us who have bought the DLCs, but we just have to live with it...
I hope that sheds some light on the issue,
Thanks

Second - I've found a work-around for anyone encountering this problem with Stars and Stripes. HoI3 Complete loads with its own icon from Steam, not the regular Paradox Launcher, which allows one to select different Mods to run, one of which is Stars & Stripes.
To get to this launcher (this is the route for me, may be different for some) go into OS (C) -> Program Files (x86) -> Steam -> steamapps -> common -> HoI3. There you will find two launchers, the light grayish brown one for steam, and the black one with white Paradox icon. Load the Paradox one, select the mod, and play. Give the Paradox icon a desktop shortcut to make it easy in the future... Cheers all
If you want to create a launcher to launch a mod directly, make a shortcut to hoi3game.exe on your desktop, then in the target box add "-mod Dies_irae_Gotterdammerung" for example, you can do this multiple times for each mod in your mod folder.
Also bear in mind that there is no DRM, so you can copy the whole game folder somewhere else and mess around with it as much as you like (and launch the game from there) while leaving your original Steam folder untouched.
Also, thank you for the advice, I usually don't like messing with the contents of my steam folder, too afraid it'll set off some alarm which would freeze my account - any modding for personal use I save for games from GG. In fact that's usually why I don't buy PI games from Steam. So the advice on DRM will be very helpful, thank you Chemicalade. - Cheers all, enjoy TFH!
But yes to confirm DI:G appears in the mods section of the game loader, before you actually run the game itself.
