Annex Russia or make it a puppet?
Hey folks, a simple question. I'm playing Germany, and I annexed Russia. However, Russia keeps having groups of rebels pop up and take lil splotches of territory. Apparently, the AI has been entirely incompetent at culling these rebels (I have groups of cavalry, as well as an entire army of infantry out there). My question is, should I make them a puppet, so as to make the Russians take care of their own? Or should I keep them annexed, and find another solution to keep them down?

You can turn countries you have annexed into puppets. There's an option under the politics screen if I remember correctly.

I usually annex the russians beccause when the rebels come out ther usually only militia divisions so a simpile light armor division really puts them down

When i play, i need ARMIES of light armor to hold russia because its so HUGE. One game i even made it into china (as germany of course), before rebels cut off the supply from RUSSIA to INDIA.

I've always had trouble holding down Russia. Like, I normally put an army or two of soldiers in there to maintain order, but they take forever to get anywhere. And the AI doesn't seem very good at moving them around when I tell the AI to manage it. Overall, I just ended up turning them into a puppet, decided I really didn't need that extra IC from having it annexed.

I dont think people understood what you try to say.
What he tries to say is; annex russia at "the bitter peace" and leting russia retreat east to ural. --> attack russia after the peace treaty is over, and puppet the eastern part...
this means; Annex western part, puppet eastern part.

Eastern part of russia has the worst infrastructure, and the hardest to defeat rebels. So this is a good way to keep supply route safe.

An other way is;
do not use infantry and armor to attack rebels. Use militia and cavalry; 25 units of 2xmilitia and 25 units of 2xcavalry under AI comand. This should maintain control of all of russia. if you go as "the dominator" say; 25 units of 2xmilitia.

the benefits of using militia instead of infantry;
- 2xmilitia is sufficient to defeat rebels
- less officers
- less manpower
- less supplies
- infantry can be used to attack other targets, or maintaining control of france, spain or UK.

I usualy annex western part and puppet eastern part and maintain control with 25 units of 2xmilitia.
As Japan I also use 25 units of 2xmilitia to maintain control of All of china + tibet and sinkiang.

I don't get the "Bitter Peace" event anymore. Haven't gotten that event in a very long time, Russia just surrenders normally and I get control of the entire thing.

Do you declare war or limited war on russia? Does Japan gain much terretories from russia? What version are you playing?
Spantz Feb 17, 2013 @ 11:15am
I think I declare limited war, so that Japan doesn't jump in. But I'd hafta check my game, it's been a while.

In my expirence, Japan usually loses China to the Nationalists/Communists, and is too busy fighting off the other asian powers and the US to actually attack russia. Only once they did, and the Chineese surrounded and destroyed them.

In version 3.05 (for the motherland, and later versions) you have to sett your wargoal at "Drang Nach Osten" to trigger the event. if you set your wargoal at conquer, you get everything...but you can change the wargoal after war has started, before they surender...
if you have an earlier version you should get the bitter peace event...

PhoenixLord96;
I would guess you have a early version of the game, maybe vanilla (version 1.4)??

Yea recently when I've played Japan has gotten their ♥♥♥♥ rocked by the Chinese. I actually tried to intervene in my most recent playthrough (the one I asked about actually), but my soldiers got supply locked and the chinese ended up pushing them back.

Overall I think I prefer puppeting, it just takes too much effort to supress the rebels in that territory

In some of my games in vanila, Japan struggled hard so I just assumed it was vanila (sorry).
In TFH, Japan takes out China (they give up, and surender the coast to japan) before Germany goes to war in 39...

haha thanks for that bit for my planning- waiting for TFH to install now!
