First, I founded this thread : http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/...ht=virtualfile
Then I followed the solution described at the end of that thread, e.g. deleting the map cache folder (content of it, not the folder itself).
The trick is, with the new TFH, under STEAM, you have now 2 Map Cache Folders... So you have to delete the content in both of them for this to work !!!
The usual one...
(1) C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\hearts of iron 3\map\cache
and this new one...
(2) C:\Users\YOUR-USERNAME\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron III\map\cache
If you forget to clean any one of the two (like I did for like an hour or so, making me wondering if death was a preferable ending to this than living life wihtout HoI3), you will still get that popup "popup: "Virtualfilesystem.cpp, line; 624. Description; the system cannot found file". If you've done it right, you should get your game back on track.
Last thing: don't forget to run your game twice (load-quit-load), to get the right checksum...
What happens for me, and has always happened, is that I load the game up through steam, and the little launcher loads up. Then I hit the button to start the game, the launcher disappears..and nothing. No running programs on task manager, nothing to do with the game at all. It just dies. And I die a little each time as well :(
If you have started experiencing crashes after installing 1.2, try this:
a) delete your settings.txt
b) starting hoi3 from the .exe not the launcher
Otherwise, the advice is as follows:
1. Install patch 1.3!
2. Make sure you have the latest directx 9.0c Even if you run Vista or Win 7 and have directX 10 or 11. They can co-exist fine.
3. Make sure you have the latest graphics drivers, either from ATI/nvidias websites, or from your laptop maker if it requires special drivers. Windows update doesn't always get you the latest versions.
ATI: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
NVidia: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx
Intel: http://www.inteldriverscenter.com/
4. You have Vista or Win7 and installed the game in program files.
Then run the game as administrator (important!) The exe, NOT the launcher.
5. If you are still experiencing problems on Vista, running the game in XP compability mode has been documented to work for a few people.
Check this link to lead how to set vista in compatibility mode: http://help.unc.edu/6037
6. If you crash on startup, find the settings.txt and make sure that the default screen resolution is something that works on your gfx card and monitor. This could also be used if you happen to set a bad setting in the ingame interface.
7. This update from Microsoft have solved issues for some: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971633
8. For freezes and choppy gameplay, try to shut any resident program in the background such as antivirus software.
9&10. Run Checkdisk and defrag your harddrive, even if you have Vista.
11. Sound can cause a crash. Install this (K-lite codec pack): http://www.codecguide.com/download_k..._pack_mega.htm
12. If you have the demo installed, uninstall both the demo and the game, then reinstall only the game.
13. Run the game in your native resolution. This will be either what you have in windows, or, if you changed that, you can look at the monitor manufacturer home page to find it.
14. If you are using HDMI, try switching to DVI if you have the possibility. This is just a symptom, an intermediate solution, when we have fixed the bug this will not be necessary.
15. Some antivirus software have removed ggcoins.dll and/or lua51.dll. This will cause the game not to start. If you get this, please tell us what antivirus program this was so we can fix it.
16. If you get the side-by side error on launch, you need to install this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
If you have a newer version installed, the installer might think you don't need to install the 2005 version, but you do. You can check in add/remove programs in the control panel if you have them or not.
17. Use with caution for testing purposes! Turn off user account control if you run Vista.
18. Except HoI3 from Vista's data execution prevention.
* Go to System
* Advanced System Settings
* Settings under Performance
* Data Execution Prevention Tab
* Add hoi3game.exe to the excepted tab
19. If your settings.txt is empty, reinstall will do the trick. Or you could copy/paste the following:
(Please note that these settings are just an example, and you might want to change resolutions and other things.)

Run msconfig (Start menu -> Run, then type msconfig)
Click the Services tab.
Check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" check box
Hit the DISABLE ALL key - this kills all services except the essential Microsoft ones.
Click the Startup tab
Hit the DISABLE ALL key - this prevents all sorts of programs from loading at boot.
Hit the Apply button.
You will have to reboot your machine - this new configuration will prevent all sorts of programs from running (including your antivirus BUT NOT YOUR FIREWALL so you should be ok). When the machine boots, run HOI3 and voila.
Mscofig will pop up on the reboot - either close it and choose "Reboot later", or just ignore it and run HOI3.

Just remember to re-enable everything once you're done playing, so you can use your antivirus, etc.
Enjoy!
When posting about your problem in this forum, please include the following:
1. When does the game crash? In loading after <loading text here>? 3 years in?
2. Does it always crash at the same place? Did you get it to work earlier (if so a reinstall might solve your problem)?
3. What screen and connection do you use? (TV/hdmi? CRT/composite?)
3. Include your dxdiag.
Here is how to find your dxdiag:
1. click on "START"
2. click "run"
3. type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of
your choice.
This post will be updated.
