Winter War 1939

As the Soviets, you get the Winter War with Finland option around the end of November, 1939. The first problem is the poor infrastructure in Finland. Bltizkrieg only works where there is a descent road system. Fortunately, I researched winter equipment and mountain troops. My troops did much better than the historical Russian performance. That raises the next problem: if you do well, a truce is automatically enforced, and you only get the historical outcome in territory. I wanted to take the whole country. Do I have to declare war on Finland before that event triggers to conquer them?

you should have the option when you get the "end of the winter war" event to continue for full conquest, though it hurts your relations with a bunch of nations and breaks your non aggression pact with Germany. you can also just end it and declare war again almost immediatly, I did that and there's no repercusions for doing so.

Another problem in 1939 is that, while the Allies are already at war with Germany, the Soviets are very high on EVERYBODY'S threat list. I'm afraid that the Allies and Axis will declare war on me. I'm going to try the 1940 scenario where the Phoney War is heating up in the West, and I can grab territory without too much backlash.

When I went as the Sovs, I conquered Finland, Persia, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Hungary (had to rush before they joined Axis) and Romania. In reality, fall of Romania would spell the end of 3rd Reich as that would mean no oil (Stalin's plan for war - Groza) but this is a silly game, and things like lack of oil are not modelled well for the AI...

Ah, forgot, got Yugoslavia too - again, had to rush before they would join the Axis.

By 1941 I was in Berlin.

Because of the rising threat level by the Sovs (no kidding!) Japan invaded my Far East and gave me a bit of trouble there.

ya u gona put most of ur men in the north at the start of the game play as sovs. Ur gona allso have to work on ur skills like attackmovement and supply org. and transport. up grading ur roads up but will battle neck once u take ur next provence. what i do is up grad some infrustructer. and put the best officers up there. try and strengthen ur men before the deadline.
I will allso move all my planes to lendengrad, so they can do ground attacks. even the fighters . this will up there exp and ur thoery for teck.

u would think it be easy to take finland but u will have to put 90 % of ur eferts there to push throw , once u do that its realy easy to overwell them. once u take that u can reorganize ur officers to odessa to start ur push in the south.

as far as takeing ever thing u can before germany attacks u . i find its kinda makes it harder to beat germany with that large of a front . the problem i find is that the south mt. areas realy steal out my army . whitch deams my men inaficent.

my best strag. for russia is to take fin. than pull my army back to a strag. line . let germany bull rush in . conter pushing them back tell it steals out. hold the line . than counter with a tanks grp up throw kiev. to danziag, cuting off there army. but we all have are ways.

i find taking as many countrys as i can it well up my threat and ill be at war to early. I know its best to push germany to attack but u stell need time to build ur self . russia starts out prety weak. the purge cuts ur leadership . ur mass men need alot of up grading IC . and u have to teck up and build tanks. this all take time . trying to push to early can work but will take exp player to know what to build and whin.

Is there a big enough increase in resources to make conquering Finland worth it? It's good experience for your mountain troops and marines, but they could get that taking Romania. I think Romania is the better target. In my current 1940 game, Germany is finding it VERY difficult to take France, but Norway is collapsing rapidly. I wish I could aid Norway, but my own economy is still in the red. Lol.
