Personally I have an Army Group (XXXXX) in London which controls all land units and aircrafts in Home Area and it helps to save some supplies and fuel.
With Navy I dont bother and link them to Churchill directly.
So basically it helps the same way as with land units according to my observations, at least with supply consumption.
If you are not a part of some sissy island hopping and place some armies under AI control, lets say on Eastern Front, then placing airforces under direct army control will improve its efficiency since every army will use their own air assets to protect or support their own land assets with less mess.
