Hearts of Iron III

Allies Expeditionary forces
The biggest fault with HOI 3 is having allies who sit out the war. Try invading Russia with Hungary, Romania, and others as allies but they will not commit troops to your invasion. You can send forces to them but there is no way to request and receive forces placed under your control. This is a fatal flaw in the game.

Not sure if you have the expansions, but, with them, it is possible to not only request allied forces, but you can even request for them to attack a specific province.

If you do have the three expansions, ensure you place an objective on a major port in your home land to try and get expeditionary forces. Place an allied objective on enemy teritory to request they attack there.

What annoys me is when they keep sending exp forces and when you cancel them they send them back. For example as the US I invaded Japan and puppeted them (So I could have thier navy and so I didn't have to bother occupying). I wanted to leave the area and have my army group move to Europe to help push back the Nazis. Japan send division arfter Division and sending them back when I cancel them. Then Nat China gets in on the act.

Creating an objective for allied forces may bring them there, then they turn around and leave, They will move toward an attack objective but not attack and they often simply retreat rather than defend a designated province. Completely unreliable, not unual for Romanian or Hungarian forces to simply leave provinces they control and move all forces to the border with Bulgaria or Yugoslavia. Further, when moving en masse to a certain region they eat up all supplies hence leaving your units without supply, therebye sabatoging your own forces. In previous versions of HOI you could simply request an expeditionary force through a diplomatic button, so I know it can be done and why not?

For me, it is a big bug in this game.

The way around this is to go to the saved game and click on the country you want to receive then start the saved game. Playing as that country immediately select the send expeditionary force then select the units you want sent to your original country. Save the game then restart as your original country and you will receive the expeditionary force. The problem with this is that in the one hour of game time to send your expeditionary force then restart as original country, the AI has taken control of your original game and is sending units all over the place. So you have to go through every unit to stop their movement. This can be a time-consuming hassle for a country with hundreds of units and disruptive; units AI has put into strategic movement will have to wait for days before you can use them again and air units flown to other bases lose organization then more again when flying back to previous bases. Therefore it is best to make this move when you are not preparing an imminent major offensive. But you will have received allied forces under your control.
