Personal union inheritance chance
Hello everyone, I'm currently playing a game as Denmark, and I've got personal unions with Castille, France, Great-britain, Portugal, Milan, Hungary, Ryazan and Naples. Some of these unions I've had for about 300 years, but I can't for the life of me inherit them. Every now and then the unions say "... will be inherited by Denmark" but it changes back to "The personal union with Denmark will continue" after a little bit. I've got 90+ prestige most of the time, have no infamy, have 200 or close to it relations with all of them and have 100 legitimacy. What could be making it so I won't inherit them? If anyone knows please tell me.

I believe it would be them not having any heirs. If they didn't have any heirs, you should inherit them.

I think you're talking about getting a personal union, I've got that taken care of, I just need to inherit them.

And if the French/Brittish/whatever ruler keeps having heirs, the 'Mother Country' cant inherit the other because it has a fully capable and legit ruler.

you must become a republic of any kind, and every time you have elections, choose the diplomatic candidate. Automatically, one of your PU will be inherited because of this choice. I might be wrong about the candidate to choose (since it was a long time ago I did this, also with Denmark), but it certainly works.

Doesn't turning into a republic make all your personal unions end because you don't have a monarch?

Its not government type that is the problem. You can never assimilate your PU partner until your nation is larger than theirs. This is a big problem for Denmark, since the best direction for expansion is south - into the HRE. Do what you can to keep your union partners happy, and focus on becoming larger than the smallest PU partner you have. I'm not clear on whether all your provinces need to core before they count towards nation size. At any rate, there won't quite be a domino effect.

KarlMonster is correct. Nation size matters a lot here. Keep relations high and keep expanding. A large colonial empire is one option. You do need to be a monarchy as Republics cannot have PU's. Every time you get a new monarch you will have a chance if inheriting.

I've long since I posted this thread finished my game but still find it strange I couldn't inherit all my PUs before the end of the game, since I was definitely larger than them. (And some were one province PUs, while I had about a hundred provinces, but I didn't inherit those either).

Bad luck or maybe a string of poor diplo rulers. Not sure. Size, diplo ruler and 200 relations are the three biggies for a PU inheritance. If those three are met on a consistant basis than it's just bad luck I'm thinking.

That pretty much explains what effects your chance.

I'm pretty sure that even the level of trust is really important to inherit a nation. Even being in the same cultural group.

If being in the same culture group matters, then that would feinitely explain it, since I was in the same culture group with almost none of my PUs.
