VRogue Now Open Source!

After 350+ hours of work, I now have a version of VRogue that I'm proud to release to the world! Not just here on steam, but also on GitLab[gitlab.com].

That's right, I've decided to reach the goal of making the game moddable in the greatest possible way: Just giving everyone the source code!

What's this mean for the steam release?

Nothing! The repository is the exact code that's in the final product; the only difference is that I've got a few flags enabled for the Steam version (one that encrypts the savegame, and another that changes the leaderboard name). Any changes I make whether my own or patches from others will be merged into the repo first and periodically pushed up here to steam.

Isn't it free now? Why pay?

Yes, it's completely free! Only purchase if you feel inclined to support my development of this or future games. Or if you just don't feel like building it yourself! Since $10 is a bit much for a compilation fee, I'll be dropping the price to $5 shortly after this announcement.

What happened to mods?

My previous announcement said that the main thing I wanted to get done for this release was mod support, and I got fairly involved in doing so. Most of the support for mods was in the form of Godot Resource Packs. Now, the more security minded among you are probably wondering what I was thinking with that, what with how that has some security issues. The answer is that Minecraft, Kerbal Space Program, and many other popular games also do mods in such a way that a bad actor could compromise their machine, and it largely hasn't been an issue.

... until recently, that is. The biggest demonstration of the kind of thing I'm talking about is the GodLoader[gamefromscratch.com] vulnerability, and the `.pck` files mentioned are exactly the kind of files I'd be using for doing modding, and which mod creators would be passing around.

So, my options from there were to make an entirely sandboxed scripting environment (likely in an entirely different language like lua) which would almost be the equivalent of rewriting the whole thing, or... this! To me, there's no greater way to mod a game than having the full source code available. Making a new texture pack won't require you to guess how things are laid out or depend on potentially out of date documentation, now you can just open up the project and go!

Development Roadmap

Roadmap Complete When I first released VRogue, it felt like 10% VR, 90% Rogue. Now, with the release of 1.4.0, I feel I've reached my goal of title’s implied balance of 33% VR, 83% Rogue. There are limits to what I can do and still stay true to the original game (e.g. you can't physically dodge a dragon’s firebolt) and I think I've reached those, so the game is, more or less, done. That said, 1.4.0 was titled "The Penultimate Update". And if it were done, it wouldn't need another update, ...

Today is the Penultimate Update of VRogue, version 1.4.0:

Changelog

VR:

Using most items is now simpler: You grab them from your inventory and pull them to yourself. (The previous method of using the trigger when hovering over the item in the inventory will still work)
You can now change the game’s handedness by grabbing the weapon out of the inventory with whatever hand you want to wield it in. This setting will persist across playthroughs. (was: everyone was right-handed).
You can now hold an item in your offhand! This only works for certain items, specifically throwables (anything with a count of 2 or more) and wands. To do this, simply pull the item out of your inventory with your offhand. This will not end your turn.
- To use the held item (to e.g. throw or zap), aim it at the tile in the direction you want to use it and hold down the trigger.
- Items you are holding in your offhand will be highlighted orange on the inventory screen
- To stop holding the item, just pull up your inventory and put it back.
Battling monsters now comes with sound effects for each animation!
The “options” screen now provides the ability to turn off aforementioned sound effects (as well as the ambient background sounds)

Bugs / Minor Changes:

The “hold to confirm” bars for actions you take that usually end your turn (e.g. moving, fighting, wielding, etc) are now more consistent - actions that will not end your turn should have brackets around them (e.g. “[calling]”), and actions which will end your turn do not have brackets.
There is now a trail of highlights pointing to your target tile, rather than just a single highlight. The highlight that indicates your player position is orange.
Fixed an issue where some monsters were still visible after the player’s death.

Penultimate?

That's right, I'm actually using the word 'penultimate' correctly; this will likely be the next to last update for VRogue. With this update, I've completed everything on the Roadmap and then some. It's like more of a VR game now than ever before, and I feel I've gotten it as close as I can without compromising the underlying Rogue port. In short, it's done!

But if it were done, it wouldn't need another update, would it? Well, just because something wasn't on the roadmap post doesn't mean I don't want to do it, and the ability to retexture the entire game is something I've wanted since day 1. And while I'm at it, why not just support mods overall? I have a plan to accomplish this, but it's going to take a while: I'm setting a tentative deadline of December 2024 / January 2025, around the 1 year mark from the game's release. That's far enough away that, practically, the game's done. Enjoy, and look forward to the day where someone with more art talent than I have (e.g. anyone) makes a prettier dungeon :)

VRogue 1.3.0 Now Playing!

Hello Rogues,

Today I've released v1.3.0 of VRogue!

Changelog

VR:

You can now indicate a tile to target (for e.g. running) using the controllers instead of only the headset. The priority is offhand -> main hand -> head.
The dungeon now has a ceiling (was: a glimpse into the terrible endless void).
- The title screen has had several of its text and logos moved or resized to accommodate this new feature.
The lighting has been re-done! Instead of a general directional light coming from the aforementioned void, there is an omnidirectional light a few meters above the player’s head.
- When you use a Wand of Light, this main light briefly shines blue.
- While hallucinating, the lighting color (and many other colors) also change
If you drink a potion of levitation, you’ll actually levitate!
Reading a scroll of confusion will turn your hands red, just as the message says.
Throwing items now only takes 1.5s of confirmation (was: 3 seconds).
Stairs now have their own hold-to-confirm boxes to prevent clipping issues
The pause screen now also has a status line.

Rogue:

The following Rogue options are now settable:
- jump - Whether to jump to the end of a multi-tile movement (true) or move the camera for each tile (false, the default)
- name - The rogue’s name. Note this only affects e.g. tombstone displays and does not affect leaderboards or save game filenames.
- fruit - The player’s favorite fruit. This can occasionally spawn instead of regular rations.
- file - The filename to save/load games to. This is only settable via ROGUEOPTS or the command line, it cannot be changed in-game.
Most rogue options can be set in one of three ways:
- Via the ROGUEOPTS environment variable, e.g. ROGUEOPTS=name=Bort,jump,fruit=apple,file=c:/tmp/zorb.save
- Via the –rogueopts command line argument, e.g. --rogueopts=name=Incognito,nojump,fruit=bat,file=c:/tmp/zorb.save
- In game via the ‘options’ button on the pause screen.

Bugs:

Fixed issue where there was a gap between walls and the floor tiles.
Fixed issue where moving the player into a door could result in the player being shunted to the side by an errant collider.
Fixed Z-fighting issues in passageways with corners

Texture packs?

game looks interesting, never played rogue personally but i love rogue likes. I feel like I'd get a headache just looking at the keyboard symbols though, any chance for texture packs or something like that through maybe mod support or dlcs?
