The rail and normal gun are good in respective situations as well besides the shot gun.
Normal in particular if you want to snipe off weak targets from a far without wasting too much energy. The rail gun is perfect for taking out many targets in a row or very distant ranged enemies (most have exactly 2 hp which is how much damage the rail will do).
I actually only ever use the shot gun to take out larger enemies close up quickly - that's not as often as I snipe out targets with the rail.
Since the shot gun has such low ammo that one should have priority for upgrading guns though.
Besides that obviously extra health pack slots, the first dash upgrade (infinite dash chains) and I also found the reflect ability to be very helpful.
Anything else didn't really do anything for me or was too difficult/risky to set up to get any use.
edit: oh and it also helps to just scavenge the first three areas for gear upgrades if you are getting stuck anywhere.
I think this is the order, most people can agree to. While each boss can be beat without any upgrades, they make your life much easier.
Agreed. South I found to be easier than West, but it's forced as the last area (I believe), so it's last. I made the mistake of doing West first; boy that was a trip.
Shotgun is better than all other guns. I STRONGLY recommend you get the bullet reflection upgrade for your sword. I didn't use it much for a lot of enemies and bosses, but the final boss has a bullet hell move, so...yea, it comes in handy. The bullet reflection dash can also help in that case. I really didn't get any of the dash upgrades other than that one, though.
If you warp out of the area and go back to it the medkits will respawn, but so will all the enemies.
