I picked up a small red square?
I just noticed that at the top of my screen, next to the star count, there's a new item, a small red square. I have no idea of picking it up nor what to do with it. What am I missing here?

Red Sigils :)

No, I don't mean the sigils (the tetris blocks), I mean a really small red square. It's next to the star count and it says I have 1 but I don't remember picking anything up that looked like it

It shows up like that if you've never encountered a red sigil lock. The only reason you would have never encountered a red sigil lock is by being a conformist that just unquestioningly listens to what a voice in your head tells you :P.

It only shows you one "current" red sigil lock and its pieces fully. The extra pieces (for locks further in the game) are shown as a small red square with a number.

So, if your next red lock requires 8 pieces, and you have 6 of those and 3 other red pieces, you would see 6/8 graphically, and a small red square with "3".

Oh, that too. Never seeing a red lock would mean no "current" red lock, and all the pieces would be for unknown locks.

don't worry... that number will increase with time. :)

Ok thanks that makes sense

Hey! What if I'm afraid of heights, huh?!

Well, let's be honest, you could also confuse it if you got a square tetromino, which would look like a regular block. The same thing would make sense for the Public Test's secret area, in which it would be a grey tetromino picked up at the end.
