I am not a smart heron, though: several of the puzzles seem physically impossible, and the time puzzles are just evil.
Oh, you mean the game. I'm 14 hours in, and completed about 2/3 of the puzzles. The last third seems to be quite a bit harder, so probably 25 hours?
The tower levels, the star levels and the levels behind the wooden planks are all optional.
The extra content (stars, prophet dudes, audio logs etc) may be optional in that they are not required to get to the end credits, but they are a full part of the gameplay, includes more levels, expands upon the story and unlocks different endings.
Lenght is hard to judge in puzzle games, but lets say 10-12h for shortest route, 20-25 for stars + other optional main content, and at least 40 if going for all the major secrets (there is reportedly about 40 secrets that are not a part of any star or other collectable stuff). suffice to say, some of the real secrets require you to go over the entire game with a comb.
