Problem: screen auto dimming while playing

Just bought the game on weekend sale and I'm having a very strange problem. Everywhere in the game, including the menu, the screen will dim down - similar to when you unplug your laptop and it switched settings - and a few seconds later it will brighten again. This repeats continuously, but isn't on a fixed interval. Sometimes it's just a few seconds between switches, sometimes tens of seconds.

Running on an MSI Ghost Pro GS60 with nvidia gtx 870m.

The framerate appears solid otherwise, but the game is completely un-play-able with the dimming. Anyone seen this or knows how to fix it?

It does not, but I found a fix along somewhat similar lines. Disabling adaptive display dimming made no difference. Nor did changing the dimmed display brightness. What did fix it was setting the brightness on battery to be the same as brightness when plugged in. It is as though the machine actually think it's getting unplugged and running on battery while in game - and this happens on and off...very strange. I game on this machine all the time and have not seen this behavior with any other game.
