First, note the number of stars on a the signs you find when first warping to an area.
Then, I'd suggest looking for stars in each sigil piece's puzzle area first. Stars are often visible by simply making sure you explore a puzzle area completely. For instance, you'll see many stars in the puzzle areas that are behind blue force fields. But often one can miss these if they are not paying attention to everything.
There are no stars that require walking through walls. However, a couple or so stars are BEHIND walls, but again, if you explore thoroughly you will eventually see them. You might have to get on top of a wall a couple times. Also, while doorways are never invisible for stars, a doorway may be hidden in the shadows.
Listen for hidden fans running too. Look for things in mazes that look obviously "unnecessary," like extra walls that seem to creat a little room. Sometimes you will find items (box, fan, etc) that are not needed to get a puzzle piece. These are often used to retrieve a nearby star.
My memory says that the entire game only contains one notoriously hidden reflector to solve a sigil puzzle or star puzzle (can't remember which) that does require some "aiming around" but even then it isn't completely random . But in the case I am thinking of, the star is easily seen behind a force field. Other than that, all of the regular type of puzzle items, like the red or blue "locks" for the force field doors, are always in their normal places beside the door. They aren't hidden or ever invisible.
After searching within the puzzles, if you still haven't found a star or stars, it is time to search the hub areas. In some 'hub" areas, all the stars are within puzzles. Others are all out in the hub areas. Or both. Pay attention to details, not tiny things like a crack in a wall or something, but rather small anomalies, like a faint light coming from an odd place during the night. Don't forget to look up.
Of course, if you can't find a star in the puzzles or in the hub world, you pretty much need to go back and start your search over.
Easter eggs are often an entirely different matter. I did all the stars and puzzle pieces and endings without a walkthrough video, but Easter Eggs? Abandon the thought of finding them all on your own!
At least one Easter egg requires getting an item from a different Easter egg that enables you to explore more of the hub map. Even with the required item, finding the second egg on your own would be a HUGE accomplishment. Even try pushing a wall here and there (but not completely random ones).
I did find around 6 eggs or so on my own. For an example, look for places where it seems like the puzzle design encourages you to get out of a puzzle without using the main entrance. Also, don't forget to look up. Some take more "platforming" than the rest of the game.
Happy searching.
Don't know if you are referring to the star in the sphynx on B4 where you have to point to the top of the pyramid in the background and the middle of the sphynx to open the wall or not but other than the QR code there isn't really any indication about that star being there. The wall completely hides it. Don't think you are thinking of that one though because you said the star is easily seen.
I think he might be talking about the star in A4 where you target the tree to connect lasers between 2 puzzles .
