If the error reappears even after verifying, it may mean that there are some underlying issues, most likely:
- an antivirus program or firewall preventing proper installation
- a bad sector or other kind of error on the disk
- malfunctioning RAM or some other component (CPU, mobo) that might cause the file data to be damaged while in the system's file cache or in transfer between the disk and the RAM.
1. The antivirus/firewall I am using is Windows Defender. Since that's rather ubiquitous for people with Windows, I'd be surprised if the Talos Principle couldn't install with this running. However, if there are specific settings to check out, I'd like to know.
2. I've "played" for about 10 hours before this started happening, which suggests that either something went haywire (and keeps going haywire) long after the initial installation, or else the offending file doesn't get used until some point in the game that I just now reached. Since I've reinstalled the corrupted file multiple times, I have to wonder if it's really the disk or something else.
3. The disk I'm using is an SSD that passes disk checks.
4. I'm able to run other Steam games from the same SSD without any issues.
5. I am not having any issues with any other games or programs.
I am unaware of any other diagnostics that I could run to monitor file data transfer. Any suggestions are welcome.
You can always try without the defender, just to be sure: Uninstall defender, verify game cache, test the game. Then install defender again if that was not the issue.
re 2: If could be that the error is in the part of archive that is loaded only on later levels.
re 3: If you have another disk, you can try reinstalling the game to that other disk to be sure.
re 4/5: absence of (noticeable) problems with other applications is unfortunately not a reliable indicator that all is fine.
As for diagnostics, you can try running a memory checker (like this one eg: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff700221.aspx ). Though again - if it doesn't detect any problems, it doesn't mean there aren't any. It's easy to prove that something is incorrect, yet hard to prove it is correct. :)
Also, you can check the checksum of the files on disk. Here are SHA1 checksums for all base gro files:
659f380c0cee49c4692785987e01c342374c214c *All_01.gro
b44277d78df5acb948fe35a004743c17b1dac5f1 *All_02.gro

HTH.
Also, it might be beneficial to see your entire log file.
boocie74, are you sure it is the exact same error? Would you please post your log file, in a separate thread so as not to hijack peach's thread. Thanks.
- Turned off Windows Defender
- Performed the game file validation step and redownloaded the offending file (all_01.gro)
- Started the game without turning on Windows Defender
I'll keep Windows Defender off while playing Talos Principle, but that's not really a great solution. I'd like to find settings to eliminate the conflict, since leaving my antivirus system off increases risk. I'll monitor this thread and search occasionally to see if someone has any ideas.
Thanks
- Load Steam
- From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
- Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
- Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.
- Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.
