Something made me give it another whirl a couple weeks ago and now I LOVE basically everything about it. Some of the most satisfying puzzle gameplay and secrets I've ever come across, and difficulty is perfect for my caliber of brain power.
So, to me, yes, it got better. But I'd already well warmed to the experience before where you are. So maybe it's just not for you.
This shows how different our perspectives can be because I'm saying EXACTLY the same as you ABOUT The Witness! I found that to be very boring and repetitive, just tracing lines on a TV screen and I've parked it at a couple of hours play. Yet I've played nearly 400 hours on Talos and the workshop games. It just proves you can't please all of the people all of the time. ;0)
Also IMO, this game is not only about the puzzles, there's also a really cool and deep narrative to uncover, from the texts and conversations on the computers, the "God" narration and interaction, the QR Code information plastered through the map, the world graphical anomalies that show the game world is a simulation, even the construction of some of the levels has a small story to tell, imo this game is more deep than it seems.
however, if English Country Tune, Baba is You or Snakebird are the type of puzzles you're after (no story, but devilish mechanics), then check out stephen's sausage roll.
The game essentially a homage to many AI existentialism, You even can find a reference to Eve no Jikan ( My Time on Eve), a Japanese anime so many hidden Easter Eggs rarely if not none games now would bother. Really, a life-changing experience game.
If you feel overwhelmed or bored you can return later to sip it bit by bit
