Alternatively, you can try checking the output format of your default audio device and see if it's set to 44100 or 48000 Hz.
Thanks for the links, but there are no solutions offered. I just can add this: I also use a USB headset, which leaves me without sound in another game as well: "Antichamber". I tried to play that without the headset, and the sound was played over my internal speakers.
