Ended the game by mistake
I had fallen in love with the demands that this game put on me to solve each problem. I particularly loved doing it without any help whatsoever, just finding out what can work as I went. Unfortunately this had a dire consequence. when I finished all the puzzles in levels ABC I had not ♥♥♥♥♥♥ all my stars and still just got the keys for level 5 in the tower. Without sufficient warning of what would happen I opened the door as directed to talos heaven I guess and that was it for my game, no more progress to work on. I am not the type to spend that much effort then start all over again, Beware anyone who does not want this to happen without really wanting it.

You can always load backup and continue from that point to reach another endings.
Thanks but that didn't work I found the backup file but it was the same as the ended version. It is such a shame because it left a huge hole over the wonderful memory I would have had for this game.
Not some backup file. Start game, Play->Talos Principle->Restore Backup.

when I start the game there is no option to restore backup
I could give you my savegame, but I don't know if that will work. Also it isn't one savegame, all savegames are put together in one file under "C:\Program Files\Steam\userdata\[STEAM ID]\257510\remote\playerprofile.dat". It could even unlock achievments I have done, that you haven't done yet.

btw: You played 46 hours and got no achievment?

That is so nice of you to offer that. I think you are right though about the progress especially the stars which would no longer be in place if you had ♥♥♥♥♥♥ them and I did not. As far as the achievments, I was playing the 64bit moddable version which does not allow for achivements. The thing is I never modded anything anyway, I just wanted to see what it was and got stuck with it, once you start you can't revert without starting over.

Btw: What I did complete without ANY outside help or information was about 6 or 7 stars, all puzzle pieces in 7 chambers of A,B,C and tower level 1-4 with the keys ready to unlock 5 but never tried it before getting lured to an honestly boring ending.
Wait, how can you not have backup data in-game? This game autosaves every time you solve a puzzle, go in and out of a puzzle, go in and out of a level, go in and out of pretty much anything. It also saves when you get one of the endings, but it saves right before the ending. So continuing your game will just play the ending again.

There should be a long list of like.. 100 autosave backups of every single time you got a sigil or star. The top autosave will go directly to the ending you received last, which is the door to infinity ending (endless loop). Try the one beneath the top option.
My guess is that the OP restarted -- doing /that/ wipes out all of your backups immediately.
I did reopen the game after it started at the begining and as you say that may have done me in. If I had known what was at stake I would have pulled the plug out of the PC. What really makes me upset is that as much work as they put into making these puzzles do delicately solvable with so many steps, they could have programmed a tiny warning (would it really be so difficult and odd?) asking you if you want to proceed with the knowlege that you will not be able to continue your progress or an immediate question of whether you would like to revert. In my opinion that was really ignorant of them. My own ignorance was only due to the fact that I REALLY wanted to do this with NO NONE NOT ANY help because in so many action games I play I really need help and this felt so good and fullfiing to think my way through it. I guess you can't have your puzzle piece of cake and eat it too
I can usually get through the game in a day or two. It's not difficult to get back to where you were. There's only a few puzzles I wouldn't want to do over again, like Egyptian Arcade, and a couple of the star ones with too many mines.

Still, to get that far and have it auto-erase is dumb. That's a flaw in the system that should be fixed.
solving some complicated puzzles are satisfying the first time, after that it is an annoyance. It is too painful to do right now, I'm working on The witness another head banger LOL
We just verified and doing "new game" shouldn't delete your backups. Note though, that you can only restore backups from the main menu, not from within the game, I think. Perhaps that part is confusing?
OMG... You are right. I cannot beleive I did not see it, maybe because I had heard about some modifible version adding the ability to save games and I assumed it had to be installed and manually saved. I looked again and there is was plain as the stupidity on my face...LOL. Anyway thanks for the support and yes it does save it seemed like about the last 10 progress points that you made. Another confusing point for me is that it must not be locally because I found the save file for the current one and a backup copy of it in the same directory.
Thanks Thanks Thanks, now I can share my head bashing between Talos principle and the witness.
Have fun! :)
