What's the red dot counter in the top left corner?

In the top left corner, there's a star counter that counts how many stars you've found. Right next to it, on the left, is a similar counter that has a tiny red box instead of a star. Anyone know what it is?

Fell in a hidden glitch-hole on some level and heard EL glitch-talk about how the mission is to pass the challenge which ends him ... but he plans to prevent that by means of deception since it would mean he'd stop existing. At least that's my interpretation of it (I won't know till I beat the game. No spoilers plz). But ye, I don't trust the bastard, so gonna climb the tower.

Not gonna post any spoilers incase someone is reading this later that's on their 1st playthrough. But I just successfully climbed the tower. Definitely one of my fave games. Will probably replay it in a month ot two once I forget the puzzle solutions and check out the other endings.
