Sure, they produce less food, but, they are good for defense - they allow a single defender to guard a lot more border tiles. They spread the bonus from police stations/banks out farther. They take only a single bunkers/towers/turrets upgrade to add defense to a bunch of tiles. They let you reclaim 2-4 city tiles in a single fight.
That being said, I did feel the same as you initially, and as soon as a big or huge farm (or big residence) is not on the border of my territory, I replace it with small buildings (which, if you chose the the Construction Worker perk, actually *gives* you materials in the end, since replacing a big one implicitly tears down the remaining parts, and it costs less to build a new thing than what you get from tearing down).
It would probably be less confusing for the base farms production to simply proportional to the number of tiles involved, neither providing a bonus nor negative. If you could actually go out of your way to build a huge farm (e.g. by building 4 little farms next to each other), then I would expect to get a bonus for doing so.
Also, don't forget the best thing about huge farms - they break up the monotony and make the city look pretty!
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that having a police station already serves a better role for defending your tiles?
Even without a nearby police station/bank, a huge farm lets you defend more space with less soldiers. Huge parks and power stations are nice for the same reason.
Goes both ways, but honestly that really doesnt matter either way. This more about the farms output then its defense, which even if output was change the defense shoudd stay the same.
But yes i agree OP. The proportions from small to big farms are off. Best to just break them down use the resources from that, and build new ones to boost production.
They look great and as ha already been said, they are a great defencive thing.
I wish there were more double and huge buildings on the map.
Eh, my problem with big farms is that an event always pops up where the living dead come up from under the ground. I have no idea why these events happen at all. They don't seem safe to me lol
Well, they produce less food, cause unhappiness, and I can find better buildings than big farms for security.
EDIT: AAAAAND it gives you four building things reclaimed (Also a not sure)
By the time I need good security, I already have lvl10 soldiers marauding around the map. If I really needed that much I'd be better off using bombs to clear hordes tbh. And with the amount of people I recruit I NEED that extra food and less of that unhappiness.
