EDIT: I got a good chuckle from the title. Sewage Canal.
Reminds me of another innovative idea i saw while repairing the traffic on some ones map.
The sewage waterfall

Does your sewage canal have anything to control water height? If you don't have water in it then you don't have a water spawner in it controlling the water level. If that's the case then keep an eye on it as it could well start flooding out where you don't want it to.
