sewage canal
i made a canal, but i couldnt put water in it, so i put sewage in it, this makes it so we have a canal, and a sewage dumping zone in the same place, i am the innovator.

In a hidden corner of the map far away from the rest of the city.

Slightly modded I use settling ponds to stop the sewage from ending up in the water. There are a few ways to deal with this but I think the ponds are one of the best ways to keep pollution out of the water for the most part. I do still have sewage outlets that do outlet into the water but the are Green-City sewage outlets so pollution is very low. If it was not for this approach the dirty water would back up at one end of the map where all the water drains to. And I wanted a not so modded approach so the ponds hit the mark and very well. Sorry for the long winded post:)
EDIT: I got a good chuckle from the title. Sewage Canal.
Reminds me of another innovative idea i saw while repairing the traffic on some ones map.
The sewage waterfall

You can see it better what they did from the top down view.

This. I terraform a nice little raised holding pond that actually drains out off the map. Gone, Done, No worries.
I JUST DUMP IT IN A MANMADE LAKE

I sort of did the same too, but to show how dirty water pollutes the land. Though polluted land wont transfer into the water.

Though the poo pond does empty into the river here.

I follow Longhaul, and sell it off to little town just across the border in Canada. They claim to use it for fertilizer. They have their own of coarse, but say ours smells much better.

I just use the inland water treatment from Sunset Harbor DLC, if you have it. It works wonderfully and you can place it in the middle of your industry as it makes a minor amount of ground pollution.

I rarely make a city where there are no rivers so I always use the NoPollute water outlet and I make some dedicated water treatment plant. I also usually add one to my power plants to re-enact some kind of cooling water outlet
I use a pond, like a few have mentioned. Keeps it self contained.

Does your sewage canal have anything to control water height? If you don't have water in it then you don't have a water spawner in it controlling the water level. If that's the case then keep an eye on it as it could well start flooding out where you don't want it to.

I tend to use these from the Sunset Harbor DLC. They put the wastewater right back into the ground and these clean wastewater so it is negligible and does not pollute the ground.

WhiteKnight77 has the right idea. Workshop holds several choices of water/sewer treatment facilities that very effectively turn sewer solids into fuel and sewer water into drinkable water.

Yes, Avanya's water treatment facilities are awesome and may make power.
