Making a beautiful city?
How do you do it? I have just about 100 hours of Cities Skylines time, and have completed all achievements but all my cities look like crap. I started using unlimted money and unlock all to be able to use any buildings and roads where needed, but I seem to always end up with super speghetti or super grids. Is there anything special that I am missing, or is it just the eye of the beholder?

maybe the map theme on which you play ? or the fact you didn't use a mod to enable multiple themes on same map ?

Or is it the fact that maybe you just *separate* things (like idustries, commercials) a bit too much from your city and don't get some never ending look ?

As for grid or spagetti layouts.. I can only encourage your to take a few looks at google earth for highways to city interchanges, city layouts, so you may get a better idea to do something different from what you already tired.

And as Bob has mentioned... what makes your city *beautiful* to you may not please someone else...

I just encourage you to go watch at some screens on my profile. If you see something that you like and for whatever reason you can't duplicate or use as an idea to your city, just add me as friend and we chat together.

If you want to see something a bit strange in terms of city building and design, check out my profile - I have drawn a road version of Homer SImpson's head that I am intending to grow into a mini-city within a bigger city on the map!

Organic and not so "planned" cities makes a better looking city...any grid city is not the most popular theme.

So long the city work its all fine

turn on unlimited money and unlock all mod, then start a new city and play around with curve road. After a while you will get what is best for you. Also, like real- cities, you will need large park here and there. I'm not taking about pre-made parks or workshop parks. I'm taking about park that as big as whole district in city, and you can only make it by yourself ! Go to the decoration, pick up paved road and pedestrian road, play with them, and add trees (better use Tree brush).

I had this problem for a looooong time.. Everything changed when I found the Rio de Jaineiro map.. from there all my ideas has flown and got better with each project. The key for me is coastlines, mountains/hills bigass airports and harbors, and follow terrain.

However its not just to have the ideas. I get alot of inspiration from cities around the world.. Want to build a big harbor? Go look at pictures/maps of Singapore.. Want long boulevards/avenues that works, and extremly well planned infrastructure to move alot of traffic by road go study Barcelona. huge interchanges go look at any major american city.. Want to build cities that has rugged terain. Look at some of the cities on the islands around southern europe.

Huge industrial zones search for Abu Dhabi industrial / urban planning.

I recently started to make my own maps to fully support my ideas for the city I want to create. Using terrain party and "refine" whatever city map I decide to use works very well for me to get the look Im seaching for.

For me, a city is beautiful if it functions and is stable (i.e. if left running forever it woudl be fine), is profitable and with very high or maxed out levels for all industry types. Size isn't important. If you can do all those things I think you've won. However these are easier said than done.

I think you need at least 18,000 to be able to achieve this because you don't get the crematorium until then. Without that your city accumulates bodies and can't meet the goal of being stable and functioning forever without user input.

Others may aim to unlock all buildings and assets including all the major landmarks.

Also, there's a reason why gridded cities and gridlock go hand-in hand. It's a very inneficient road network design. I don't want to go into the reasons why here, suffice to say that if you rely solely on a grid pattern I think you'll struggle in this game without lots of metro. In fact unlocking metro is probably on of the keys to getting your city functional and stable also. At least according to what CSL seems want you to make.

Aside from that, preserving nature and having lots of green space is essential for beauty in my opinion.

When you're building your city, do something a little bit odd every step of the way. Instead of making a perfect grid, mess with the grid a little bit. Make some weird patterns along the hill side. Make a city that weaves in and out of the shore line.

At first, it'll hurt because nothing is organized. However, over time, your city should feel a bit more personal to you. You need quirks to have a personality, and the same goes for your city.

semicircle roads help a lot, you can fill with light residential or commercial
