Put down a train station somewhere and put down trees and see if it reduces the noise around the station. My test results tell me no (or certainly not enough to make any difference).
The standard game Roads with trees on the road DO reduce traffic noise. Placeable trees might reduce road noise now that it is based on actual traffic density now and not just road size. My tests were before this change.
I tend to use the largest size trees as I figure they have more effect than smaller trees.
