Can't save game, please help!
I've not been able to save my Skylines games for the past week. I've tried saving to both the cloud and my local drive but it makes no difference. When I press save it looks like it's saving but the save file doesn't appear in the list of saved games so can't load it and autosaving isn't working either. This has happened since Steam told me it was doing a reinstall of the game when I tried to play it last week. The game seems to work fine apart otherwise. Please help!

Maybe a Steam issue. Have you tried reinstalling Steam?

Thanks for the suggestion, I removed Steam and reinstalled it and Cities and still have the same problem. I can't save my game whatever I do and have tried different maps and starting new games. I disabled all my mods and assets and I still can't get it to save. Please help, I need Skylines in my life!

When you click on Save, does it actually state Saving then Packaging in the upper right hand corner next to the settings button? Also, try labeling the city with a sequential number for each save.

It says 'saving' next to the settings button but doesn't say 'packaging'. I've tried saving under different names, starting new games and new maps, turning all my mods off but doesn't make any difference. The saved games never show up in the menu and when I choose 'resume' game it loads one from months ago. I've been playing C:S for 5 years and never had problems saving before and haven't changed anything on my computer.

Let's start by seeing if it's mod related. Add the launch options -noWorkshop and -disableMods to Steam, then start the game and start a new map. Test to see if you can save it.

How To Set Launch Options
  • Right-click on the game title under the Library in Steam and select Properties.
  • Under the General tab click the Set launch options... button.
  • Enter the launch options you wish to apply (be sure to separate each code with a space) and click OK. Should look like this:
    -noWorkshop -disableMods
  • Close the game's Properties window and launch the game.

This just started happening to me today. The launch options didn't help. trying a reinstall now.

Still won't save. F1 didn't work at all. I see there are other threads about this but never any resolutions.

Go to the workshop link above and then go to your subscribed assets/mods and click Unsubscribe All. Open the game and go into content manager and ensure everything is gone. Then through the Steam overlay, uninstall the game. Once done, search for these folders.

C:\Users\UserNameHere\AppData\Local\Colossal Order (you might have to go to Folder Options and select show all files/folders including hidden files/folders).

Save any custom maps, screenshots that you want to keep or assets that you created to a different folder.

X:\Program Files (x86)\SteamLibrary\steamapps\workshop\content\255710 (X being the drive you have the Steam Library where Cities Skyline is installed).

Delete both of these folders.

Once done, reinstall Cities Skylines from Steam and let us know what happens. You may even want to install it to a different drive.

Hey, thanks for the response. It's working again. I found a thread on Reddit and it's bizarre but simple. Just move the savegame folder. I simply moved mine to the Appdata folder. For some reason the Appdata folder was Hidden so i also unchecked that.

From what I've read above... Suggest if it happens again you simply quit to desktop and re-start computer.
Has fixed many of my Skylines problems.

Thanks your all the advice. I tried moving the savegame folder but it made no difference, still can't save. I'll try what Avanya suggested and hope that works.

If it doesn't save with the launch options in place, definitely also make sure to whitelist cities.exe in your antivirus app. It may be blocking Cities from creating a savefile.

It didn't save with the launch options in place so I'll look into my antivirus app, thanks Avanya.

No problem. Fingers crossed that'll do the trick. But if it doesn't, then the best place to get help would be the official support forums. :)
