More RAM usage!
I recently doubled my RAM from 8GB to 16GB because I couldn't play the game anymore. The game firt took up 5-6 GB of RAM and now suddenly 11-14 GB of RAM and now I still can't play the game anymore. (I'm 100% sure I bought the RAM that fits my pc).

Is there any way to fix this problem? Thank you!

Have you changed your page file? Are you playing the game modded/unmodded?

Temporarily launch the game with the --noWorkshop flag and start a new city. report your results.

Download the Loading Screen mod if you haven't already and load your save. That will tell you how much RAM your game is currently using and give you an idea on how much RAM you probably actually need based on what youre downloading from the workshop.

A good size pagefile is probably the solution here. I recommend setting it to 32GB and ofc make sure you have that much free space on the disk it's on.

RAM usage going up isn't surprising. With 8GB your game would be relying on the pagefile to load, so now that you have more available RAM, it's taken some load off the pagefile and is using RAM instead.

But we can also take a look to see what's happening with your game and confirm if it's even memory related at all. :) We'll need the output log (called player.log on Mac and Linux) for that. This guide explains where to find it, and recommends some sites to upload it to, since we can't attach files here on Steam.

its weird because before I upgraded the RAM the game was using 6GB of RAM and now 10 to 14GB of RAM..

This is normal. You have two types of memory for this game. RAM and Virtual Memory.

When you add more RAM, windows will try to keep as much RAM filled as possible to make your system faster. Otherwise, with only 8GB of RAM, windrows is constantly swapping stuff it needs out of RAM and putting it temporarily onto your page file (Virtual Memory) where it holds it until it is called up for use again. This swapping back and forth is time consuming and can slow your system down slightly.

This is a good thing that it is uses your RAM more efficiently.

So, how it it running now after making the above changes?

Thank you for your response! The mod says it took up 19.4GB of RAM.
and will it help if I download the missing assets or not?

Thanks!

Downloading more assets will increase memory usage. Everything you're subscribed to takes up a bit of RAM. So the less you're subscribed to, the less RAM is used.

I would recommend (I was having the same problem) doing this (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-US/troubleshoot/windows-client/performance/slow-page-file-growth-memory-allocation-errors). It allows you to basically create ram out of your disk. I got another 20 Gigs, and now it runs perfectly.

My experience. I had a 16 GB RAM and started using mods. I soon hit the ceiling at 14+ GB. During the game it would knock out my mouse driver and I no longer could click in the game or in Windows. I recently upgraded to 32 GB and the game runs much better, and windows mouse doesn't break.

My advice is; if you use NO MODS then you should have minimum of 16 GB for best performance. If you use 10+ mods and 20+ assets, then you should have minimum of 32 GB ram.

As long as you have plenty of HD, the system will use more for Virtual Memory than ram.

I don't regret getting the extra ram.

Actually, the page file doesn't create RAM. It creates more temporary memory. RAM is Physical Random Access Memory that is very fast. page file memory is temporary memory that is swapped out of ram and onto your page file that is on your drive that is very slow.

If you run out of RAM, then it has to move important data out of RAM and onto the page file, but then it needs to put it back again almost immediately, then put something different from RAM into page file, for the next asset that needs to be in RAM, so it will have a lot of lag from doing this over and over, especially when you do this with hundreds or thousands of asset while gaming.

Scrolling across the map or spawning new vehicles/pedestrians, over and over will make the game lag and even cause loss of FPS.
