How to allocate more RAM?
Hello, I have an issue where the does never use more than 50% of my RAM, where it then maxes out and as a result, I run into a lot of lag issues as I play with a lot of assets. My PC has 16gb of ram, of which the game only uses exactly 50% at max (according to task manager), even though there's much more free ram available. How can I allocate more RAM to the game such that it can use more then just 8GB?

thats not ram issues anymore. ram is loading. maybe look at your main and graphic processor as well. ram is an issue on startup, processor and grapphic card affects fps in game

Most likely your operating system is reserving some RAM for itself or other processes. The best way to keep an eye on the game's RAM usage is the Loading Screen Mod. As it loads everything, it will show you RAM usage and how much virtual memory the game uses. If it's using a lot of virtual memory, then unsubscribing workshop assets would likley improve performance.

Are you running other applications at the same time? Google Chrome is a big RAM hog.

That's exactly how it's suppose to work. When your RAM starts filling up, Windows will move unused apps to virtual memory (paging file on your drives) so it can save RAM for immediate use by other apps.

If you are running into lag issue (whatever that is), then it is usually either memory getting full, too many mods that are altering the game and chewing up too much CPU time. Maybe your city is nearing limits and causing lag issues.

But the only way to allocate more RAM, is buying more RAM. If you want to allocate more memory, then you can try to turn off Windows auto-paging file resizing, and manually setting your paging file size to the size or you RAM, or two or three times your RAM, depending on how much you need.

Here's a good paging file How To (Make sure you set minimum and maximum the same size):

You can also disable all of your apps to disable them from auto-launching with windows in Task Manager (CTRL+SHIFT then tap ESC) under the startup TAB.

But it help is you specify the lag. Is the game running slow as it takes longer than 10 seconds for a day to pass? Traffic is moving slower than normal? FPS is really low (How many FPS do you get)? Long loading times? Et cetera.

Remember that there are at least 4 different RAM numbers. If you have no page file, it's possible that the game is using 15GB of virtual memory but only 8GB of working set, and that what you're seeing is that latter number.

Wow, thanks for all the answers. So, I wanna summarize what solved the problem for me. I do have a page file. The mistake was that it was on the (old and slow) hdd instead of the ssd. Thus, everytime the page file was accessed, the disk was too slow and caused the lag. After changing this, the issue was mostly resolved. I also found that my RAM still is not enough and I plan to add more, but so far the game is playable again

I am glad to hear that the pagefile helped you.
That said I have as well 16GB and a 34GB pagefile with close to 3564 assets and 100 mods now. Which is probably the max I can have unless I get more memory or a bigger pagefile :)

I was able to add some more RAM to my PC recently, I now have 20GB. The combination between moving the pagefile to the SSD and adding more RAM solved part of the problem. There was also lag created by my CPU being slowed down because of a broken driver. It send so many requests that the 1st core was constantly busy which basicaly slowed down my computer without it being obvious looking at taskmanager.
