Poor performance (i7-9700K & GTX 1080TI)
Hello everyone,

This is my first post here so if i do anything wrong please tell me ;)

So i've been playing Cities Skylines for over 4 years know and upgraded my rig a couple of times for this game.

now i came to the point to upgrade my gtx 950-2gb to a GTX 1080TI i knew i wouldn't get that much of a performance boost but this was really awkward.

I have 32 gigs of ram, i7-9700K and that 1080TI. but the wierd thing is is that i run mostly at 15 FPS yes 15 fps arround 850 assets and 86 mods and 7 DLC's. The processor runs max at a 40% and the GPU at 55% with the dynamic resolution mod with 350% resolution. And my city now has around 6000 people in it.

My question is how can it be that I get such poor performance, I know that the game mostly depends on a CPU and ram but this is really weird in my opinion e.g. friend of mine runs a RX480 8gigs, i7-6700K 32gigs ram and with mods and assets he's getting a stable 60 fps.

Do you guys have any idea or tips?

thanks in advance :)

FPS has been talked to death in these discussions. There is not much you can do then use the mini fps mod.

with 32GB you have enough RAM but then again depending on what you have on mods/assets.
As you are using windows you need a pagefile of at least 16-48GB RAM.

Do you have any background programs running you don't need?

Any city you are building as it reaches around 100k will slow down that said I have seen an improvement in speed.

Do you have an SSD or an old HD?

Found out that the cleared Transport Lines Manager 13.2 birng my FPS down to 3-5 Frames per second. After disabling it my frame rate pops back to 60 FPS. My advice is to check if that is your issue to.

This game will struggle to maintain 30 FPS zoomed in no matter what. This is a stationary game (ant farm) and doesn't need uber FPS to play. So the dev used those free resources to reserve for them when you need them in game.

It won't be log before your 9700k (8-core/8-thread) will be hitting 100% as well. This game was designed to use up to 4-core/8-thread CPUs. So your system will max out soon.

You probably should have invested in a 6-core/12-thread, or 8-core 16-thread CPU for new releases coming out so that will take advantage of more cores/threads.

I did the same thing, but it was x-mas time and they were out of 9900k, so I saved $100 and bought the 9700k. I was going to return it after x-mas, but got busy and missed my deadline.

But 15 FPS sound normal when using mods, as they are external to the game and add more of a load to the system.

I'm surprised you didn't already know this from playing for over 4-years. This question is asked almost daily.

i boosted my page file to 64 gigs and it is all on a ssd

Probably asked you this before Mark but what happened to your 5820k....? I can't imagine that you have seen much in the way of differences from that to your 9700k in this game, thinking that you don't overclock as a rule...?

The 9900k that I have seems to be reasonably utilised, might be tempted to try one of your old saves from the workshop with a very high population to see how it holds up.

I get around 25fps or so with a 108Ti at 1440p, eye candy settings are high.
I have a 9900k and 32GB of RAM.

I do not use that dynamic resolution mod tho.
Somewhat linked but the biggest factor for me is not the FPS but the time taken for a day and night cycle to complete. It will get to the point where changing the speed factor will no longer change that time.
You have played the game for four years...? I'm sure that you have seen this many times before :)

I recently got it back the other day, when the guy wanted a new Ryzen syste.

But when I bought the 5820k, I was upgrading from an i7-4790k 4-core/8-thread (4.4 GHz auto-overclock) that was pegged at 100% for the longest time. I was expecting a noticeable change, but the 5820k was only running 40%. I figures it would be the same, considering the 5820k only runs 3.3. GHz under load. So it was only 750 the speed, but extra 50% cores. So I figured around 75% CPU usage. or 67% as it would max out 8 of the 12 threads. But 40% was a shock. I figured the 6 full cores gave it a boost over the helper cores?

But overall, the 5820k ran exactly the same as the 4790k. I just was able to run other tasks more smoothly. The same for the 9700k. Even though it was maxing out the CPU 100% on all eight cores, it was able to run several apps in the background without hiccup. So, the 100% load was still a light load and the CPU never gets hot.

The 9900k that I have seems to be reasonably utilized, might be tempted to try one of your old saves from the workshop with a very high population to see how it holds up.

The load goes up with the agent limit. Once you near it, it will max fairly regularly. 95%-100%

But go ahead and load it up. It may crash, as the new update has changed the base game dramatically. So it will slowly crash for a while, then recover.

No workshop nor DLC needed:

I was quite pleasantly surprised at how well your venerable city ran....

not that it needed it of course but that is also with my 2k assets and a stack of mods loaded.
