Are Industrial areas necessary?
I am trying to have a green city but the game demands that I put the yellow industrial zones.I got the Industry DLC and I rather use them instead the default ones. Is this possible?

Yes but your commercial will demand generic goods also. They can be brought in from another city to some extent but your shops might run low. There is an option in the city policies to filter industrial waste that lowers the pollution.
You can use Generic industrial zones in small clusters to satisfy the requirement of Generic Goods without imports.

If you don't have Industrial areas for Generic, you will not produce Generic goods and your Commercial Zones will be dependent on imports for this; which will clog up roads, giving extra traffic to your commercial zone areas and those are already the worst areas to manage. You can use cargo harbor and train in commercial areas to spawn traffic into the zone rather than on the edge of your map to pile up on your interchanges.

I wish the Industries DLC buildings included a Generic Goods factory.
I am surprised a Modder hasn't created a set of Unique Factories that produce Generic Goods.

Another thought: You can use Offices instead of Industry - Offices do not create freight traffic, and to my knowledge do not receive customers - only employees. Office areas are nice to put in alongside Commercial Zones, especially high density, because they will give no-import low traffic buildings into your otherwise highest traffic zone.

It's valid to get to offices, and slowly transition to a high education Offices based economy that ignores industry altogether. This is conducive to maximizing multiple campuses.

But if you want Industries DLC at its best, you can use Unique Products to supply your commercial zones but you do want some Generic Goods. You don't need to use those Industry Districts. It's better not to, because they will gobble up your materials and act as a hidden consumer inside your supply chain. Have 1-2 generic industry areas, set them up the policies for high industry and the industrial waste filter. High level industry generic zones want those high educated workers from Campus DLC.

Thanks for the detailed response. I am new to the game and I am a bit confused. Are you saying that office buildings can replace generic industrial areas and keep its demand low?

Shopping is optional in this game. You do not need commerce or industry and it will greatly reduce vehicle traffic.

Office are considered industry and will provide jobs and don't need freight.

You can't place office for a while, so you may need an unlock all mod if you want to avoid commerce/industry. or build a minimal amount of commerce/industry until you unlock office, then rezone them all to offices if you wish.

If you have Green Cities DLC, then you can build special Office IT districts that make freight for commerce to sell that don't create freight vehicles. Then you can have shopping and commerce together without industry and much less traffic.

You Citizen need Job only., Office is an option.

The game sees Office as an Industrial Zone that does not have customers or produce freight. When zoned, it will consume Industrial Demand. However, if you want high end usage of Industries DLC, you will want to keep your Industrial Demand high, so that you can fill jobs in your Industrial Zones, which will help them grow.

So you can use Office as the foundation of your employment, and maintain just enough Commercial to sell off your Industries DLC Unique Goods or you have to export them all which is often less than you would get than selling in commercial zones. By using Offices as the foundation, you can maintain just the minimum Commercial to sell your Industries DLC goods, and a barebones minimum generic industry to satisfy that side of commercial zone needs.

This way you will have best use of your content, but also have the fewest traffic issues possible with an Office-Based economy.

Thank you so much man. Seems like you have expert knowledge!

If you want to use only GREEN / IND. areas, you can use FORESTRY instead of stinky, polluting industries. They work well.
