Going from highways to large roads
I don't get it. Highways are a *pair* of multi-lane one-way roads and somehow I have to connect them to a *single* large city road. The only way I've been able to configure it that it allows me to is to use a highway exit ramp. That that creates a terrible bottleneck - three lanes down to one and up to three again. What am I missing?

An anarchy mod, among other things. Also, you don't really want to just do that; putting in a roundabout or interchange is probably your best bet without context... could you screenshot the offending area?

Trying not to use mods.
Roundabouts take up a huge fraction of a tile. And they don't solve the problem. I still have to connect a highway to a single road.
I don't know how to attach a screenshot. :( But I guess I'd better look up how to do that...

You can use f12 or shift-f12 - high def (those work if you have enabled steam overlay) and then paste the link to the shot in a comment

Another tip is to "split" the exit, e.g. one lane entering goes right, the other goes straight, one line exiting the highway comes from the left, and one comes from straight ahead, etc.

No. It won't let me attach more than one road like that.
this isn't the best solution but 2 lane 1 way streets work well as an alternative to highway off ramps. having 2 slow lanes of slow traffic may be better then a bottleneck with fast traffic

How is it supposed to be done?
How does everybody *else* do it?

Your second picture is pretty much how I do mine. Basically it makes a Y shape, though sometimes people getting off use it as a way to u-turn and get back on the other way for some reason.

With this situation I would recommend what I call a "lane bridge." These screenshots show how to do one. Yes, it shows what mods I have active (fine road anarchy and no pillars) but it can be done in a fully vanilla game once the highway is unlocked.

Keep in mind that as traffic volume into that area increases it could eventually mean replacing this "bridge" configuration with extending the highway connection into a spur route. The highest population I've gotten one of these to function in was around 40,000 before the traffic started backing up onto the highway. Try to avoid making the traffic on the road this feeds into stop for any reason. Use the 'junctions' tool under the 'routes' tool to turn any stop lights into stop signs making the traffic entering the feed road stop and giving the feed road free flow. I hope this helps.

EDIT: I didn't include a "final product" working example of this type of junction. This is from my city Bay of Plenty. I have 2 of these configurations, 1 in the main part of the city as well as 1 in the agricultural part of the city. Both have the same intersection traffic control which is no traffic lights to make the traffic on the road coming from the highway stop while the roads going into it have stop signs. This city is relatively new so not a full test of capacity for this type of tie in.

Here's my typical start. Those two roads between highway and 4lane/2way are 2lane/1way roads:

Never connect high speed roads directly to a normal road. This will create a massive jam once your city reaches 100k+ cims. Never create fourway intersections, only t-sections and make sure there's a distance of at least 50 between each one of them. The best highway exit is a t-section connecting to a double looping roundabout with ramps leading to main roads. Key to controlling traffic in this game is making sure they never stop moving. Avoid traffic lights at all costs, zone commercial next to the big roads and residential on local roads with offices between them to block some of the noise.

Possibly too early in the day for me but I wasn’t sure of the question so I will post these and hope it helps some.

I can push a great volume of vehicles through a “ramp piece”. The angle has a lot to do with it too. If they have to slow for the off ramp this will cause bottle necking. The stock interchanges are ok but as you grow with the game you will find ways to tweak them to allow more volume without mod influence.

Just create one way roundabouts that connects highway to main roads. Never had traffic problems with a roundabout, just make sure it is large/wide enough.
