Doesn't really mater as long as they are not directly under the flight path. As to orientation I usually build three terminals with their own set of interconnected runways set in a triangular configuration so orientation doesn't much matter either.
It is very hard to find the sweet spot to make the plane land and take off realistically because the AI find the nearest path before they started to land or take off. So they will end up U-turning when take off, or U-turning when landing. I learned that the hard way when creating a map, spent almost a day just trying out airport placement and airplane path just to make that smooth landing and take off.
There I was thinking all along it was the wind.
Once again CS seems to have opted for stupid over realistic.
I should have known the dev's would _ _ _ _ that up as well.
The most infuriating I've experienced is the AI somehow uses my airport as a checkpoint. They land at my airport then fly off immediately to the other side of the map. It's like they realized that they just land at a wrong airport.
All traffic flies straight in and strait or takes wide right turns going out.
