Unrealistic compared to what economic system? What may seem unrealistic to you is a reality for other people. Not everybody lives in a third world country where everything is cheap.
A school doesn't cost $10,000 to build. It costs millions
leading to and away from the city. But I only do that if I actually max out the price on both of these.
Otherwise, I only get slightly more than 400€ per week, which is pretty much exactly what the upkeep costs me. I don't know if the price actually has any impact on anything but I'd imagine residents living in my city passing through the toll booth are going to be less happy, though I don't actually know that for sure.
I guess they can be worth it if you really have a lot of traffic coming into the city, otherwise, I'm not sure if you should really bother with them.
But real problem is that real reasonable pirce should be lower than that because everything cost had been ripped off, scammed, cheated while same time pay low wage to keep it's low, ripped common people off from few in power keep themself high unreasonable wage. Basic we had realistic money with unreasonable manage, due greed? or Bank control and cause thing realistic money unbalanced in real life? I don't know. but something wrong in this world with realistic money, I guess game might be more fair and balance with money and cost than real life while real life doing unfair and unbalance wth money, out of control.
I may make the "inner city" highway a toll, that way they pay for the straightest way. I havent watched enough youtubes to see if the A.I. is smart enough (hahahaha) to go around the outside to dodge the toll...

I'm currently testing it, but it does seem that they prefer going through the toll booth as opposed to taking the slower and longer toll free path.

Building it like that yielded slightly different results and quite a lot of cars actually decide to use the dirt path as opposed to going through the toll. Nonetheless, a lot of vehicles STILL pass through the toll.

Like that though, it's uncommon for vehicles to still pass through the toll.
I'm assuming the AI just doesn't like the slowdown of the toll road, so if anything, they prefer a different road not to avoid tolls, but because it is faster than driving through it.
Let's said highway with very heavy traffice, but no one ues other smaller road other side, so you set toll on highway to encouarge few people to use smaller road, at same time keep highway much more flow, is that make sence?
Toll should help cover cost of highway road and wage, but not to make profit, that is not a goal for toll, toll is goal keep control of traffic.
Going to test that now as well to see if more traffic passes through when the price is really low. But from my experiments, I can tell that even with maxed out price, the AI isn't really all that smart when it comes to avoiding it. Even such a neat little dirt road that is only slightly slower than the toll, they still mostly drive through it.
EDIT: It really seems like the toll booths and their price really affect whether or not people bother wanting to pass through or not, but at least from my pathfinding experiments and from observation, it doesnt seem like they drive around it. They seem to not be appearing at all.
Two of the closest roads leading into the industry part of town had toll booths on them, and traffic is pretty much jammed as is already. After I raised the price to maximum, all that usuall traffic was nowhere to be found. I was sure that the traffic jam would just happen in another part of town but that wasn't the case.
EDIT 2: Time of day might've affected that experiemnt :X
You can make around double or so money placing them right in front of outside connections but only with the price maxed out. They dont make a lot of income though.
And with double I mean, twice as much money as they cost to maintain so they're not all that useful
