Zoning Industrial in a District
Does anyone here know what happens if you make a farming district, add the desired buildings, and then paint the left over zones inside that district as industrial? Do they become a farm or farm-related industry, a random industry, or do they not generate anything at all?

For that matter if you had a commercial or residential zone inside that area would they grow or do they remain empty?

I take it you're talking about the "Industries" DLC Industry specialization district tool? If you zone "regular" industrial zone squares on an idustrial specialization district it will have no effect on them and they will merely grow into "generic" industry. Same with commercial and residential, no effect on them whatsoever.

Parks, Industries and Campuses are called Areas rather than Districts. Areas and Districts can overlap. So if you have a farming area overlapping a generic industry district you'll have normal industry mixed in with the farming.

If you overlap a farming district with a farming area you can have both specialised and zoned farming buildings together.

I love doing just this. I make a standard farming specialization district matching my farming zone. So I have the main buildings I place, with the empty bits filled in by the standard zoning buildings for flair. It really adds character to the areas. Even moreso for the logging and mining areas than the farming.

Picture of a logging zone with the logging industry district plus logging specialization. You can see the mining mix right beside it.
