New player WTF do I buy?
So I'm looking to buy the game but the store page is insane and I have no idea where to start. Is there any selection of DLC I should go for when starting out or should I just go for the base game till I know what I'm doing?

Thanks for the advice!

If you are uncertain then what Metacritical (Rapture) suggest - just get the base game. There will be future sales for DLC. The thing to remember is the base game is far, far more than what Cities Skylines started out as, because every DLC introduced new features to the base game.

If you do want to pick up some DLC right now, I would suggest looking at the expansion DLCs only. Purely personal recommendation are:

  • Snowfall = If you like trams. I love trams though. Ring ring! I don't like the snow levels though.
  • Mass Transit = Core gameplay loop is transport, after all, so this gives you more stuff to play with. They are pretty "useless" in that blimps and monorails and such just gives more problems but I treat the game as a toybox and more toys is fun.

Parklife / Industries / Campus = I'll say this are only of interest if you like micromanagement.

I also suggest you don't touch the Workshop yet until you've messed around a bit. Once you have a better idea of what the base game does and what annoys you, then look at the Workshop.

But above all, just have fun :)

Base game! DLC's offer things that are important for some players, while other players do not care about that content. After a few hours you know what you want.

I'd also add: wait for the steam summer sale. It's said to start june 25.

Start with just the base game.

Once you've played for a while you'll get a feel for anything you think is lacking. I always wanted 2 lane highways (which I could have got via Workshop, but that's not the point) so I got what is still my one and only DLC, Mass Transit.

And always wait for a sale. The older DLC will be 50%, newer ones not so much off.

Thanks for the input all, I'm pretty interested in the Mass Transit DLC but the point about the upcoming sale is a good one... I'll see if I can hold out till the 25th!

If I cave early I'll get the base game for now and add Mass Transit later.
