Circular city
Anybody tried a circular city? What are the pros and cons and how to fix it?

I just don't like curved roads. They break up the zoning squares and cause lots of small buildings. This can cause building limit troubles very, very, late game.

But if you stay withing the 9-tile of the vanilla game, then you should have zero issues at all. I've built a few of them and have the same issues as any other city.

Gawd... someone had to mention circular cities lol ;)
Hmm... let's see. I think my first ones were way back just after release,

I refined them over time...

and then I pushed the boat out to attempt the largest possible,

That one got the obsession under control for a while...
until I took the whole circular concept to a whole new level with the building of Yin Yang City. This was not one but two circular cities in the form of the yin yang symbol ;)

As you can see, circular cities have been a passion of mine and while it isn't the only type of city I've built, they are a lot of fun. They work surprisingly well and I'm sure you'll have fun developing them. I wish you success ;)

Any particular tips on the layouts? I was thinking on having an underground highway "ring road" going one direction and another one underneath going the other direction. All the rings would have monorails going around in opposite directions.

That sounds fine, although another option that's fun to try is to avoid using any highways ;)
Don't worry too much about the road layout as the circle kinda dictates that naturally. Be careful with one way systems though. What you do need to focus on are the zone locations and their relationship with each other.

What's the optimal layout to get the most people in without them complaining of the lack of jobs? One tutorial I see have the stores on the spokes and the industry in the middle.

Do you do one of the spokes is an in spoke and another a going out one?

How about garbage? Where do you guys place those?

Along with this, circle roads (if you use just one circle) can limit the area usable for buildings, and (using more than one circle) traffic might get bad.

But it does look somewhat unique, I'll give it that.

Like any other layout, all you need is a good balance of worker/jobs in the area to keep traffic low. But if you have too many workers (residential) then cims will drive out looking for work. Same with jobs. Cims will want to drive into the circle and cause traffic.

But this happens with any type of city. If you want low traffic, then you need to balance your jobs to workers ratio. You'll need to do the same for freight as well (commerce to industry ratio)

Mass-transit can pick up some of the slack as well.

Like -DI- rmjohnson144, I'm not a big fan of curves as it doesn't zone very well. I'm only aiming for a 50k-60k population so have plenty of space to spread things out. My highway is the big circular road around the edge.

Meh... there is nothing wrong with zoning along curves. You just don't get wall to wall rows of buildings. A little space between plots is a good thing sometimes and you shouldn't be afraid of using curves.

Incinerators at equidistant points around the outside of the circle, depending on the size.
