Extremely long loading time [SOLVED]
My game takes way too long to load. Everyone of my saves (even with only 10k population) take about 10 minutes to load. I don't think this should be the case.... I can't remember any specific time this started, so removing subscribed items is not an easy option.

Additinional info:
- happens with 200k, 25k and 10k cities
- game is saved on SSD
- I have around 1300 assets/mods subscribed (I think around 25 mods active)
- PC specs: 16gb DDR3, i7 4790K (@4,2ghz), 256gb SSD as C:, 120gb SSD where C:S is saved

I tried to search for some answers, but I mainly found that I should unsubscribe some stuff. However, many people also reported they have no issues with 2000 assets, so I would rather not start to deleting my stuff.

Any help is much appreciated!

I would try exiting every tab before you start up the game and if that does not work.
Try exiting stuff in background in task manger might work worked for me.

Let's put that into perspective.
Currently, I have 1274 assets enabled and 26 out of 129 mods enabled and loaded a save just for the sake of this.

That's 5 minutes and it is all loaded into RAM, since I have 32GB of RAM which is more than enough for this amount of content.
Also, note that I very rarely enable this many assets for the simple reason that not all of my cities require them. I hand pick which assets I will use for a particular city build and usually it's around the 900 mark.
So... seeing as you are subscribed to way more than your 16GB has capacity for, then the additional loading time is due to having to write the remainder to your hard drive (ssd). And tbh 10 minutes sounds reasonable. You will have to adjust your expectations and also consider the effect of oversubscribing will have on your game performance and on your hardware.

This is my P.C.
I7-4790K @ 4.00GHz, 32.0GB RAM, nVidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti

At the moment it takes a minute or two to load up any save. I have 1460 assets and running 29 mods. Before the wife doubled the RAM for me at Christmas the quickest load time would be 10 minutes. At that time I had 800 assets and 20 mods. I should mention that without “Loading Screen Mod” my load time would be close to five minutes. Also without the “Less Steam” mod it would for sure take five minutes to load a save.

Have you tried using the "Loading Screen Mod (Test) ? It genuinly cuts down loading time. I have the same pc sped as you and with 950 assets and 98 mods it takes an average 2.5 minutes to load! Used to take over 10 minutes with slightly less mods!

I've monitored my RAM usage through taskmanager and it never got over 13gb even without loading screen mod, but that still might have been a problem. I actually quickly tried the Loading Screen Mod earlier today but had no time to response since I had to go, but it did work! Now it only takes around 2 minutes to load which is quite reasonable.

I also checked some of my oldest subscriptions from 2015 and there was lots of outdated stuff which I unsubscribed. Now that I have got rid of some stuff and have the loading screen mod, the problem is solved.

Thanks for the helpful links and all the answers!

I had a simmilar problem. Where the game wont load past 3/4th of the loading bar. turns out, my save file had mods i was using, and some how, probably when i shifted the game from one library to another, all the mods were turned off by default. When i turned them on again, the problem was fixes.

DISAGREE i am at 10 mins with a new ryzen 5 3600(6c12t) with 512gb m.2 and 64gb and loading screen mod says i am only using 54GB out of 64 with 10k assets

Whan was the last time you cleaned your SSD's???
(They tend to have software for maintenance)

It's probably insufficient RAM causing it to page a lot during loading. Mine used to take ages to load with 12 GB, since upgrading to 24 GB it's a lot faster.
That said, it shouldn't be too bad on 16 GB, but it depends on how many custom assets and DLCs you have.

if it takes a long time it means that windows is using a pagefile (regardless of your RAM)

What's your pagefile set to?

To see if something else is up, try adding the launch options -noWorkshop and -disableMods to Steam and start a new city. Does it take just as long to load?

How To Set Launch Options
  • Right-click on the game title under the Library in Steam and select Properties.
  • Under the General tab click the Set launch options... button.
  • Enter the launch options you wish to apply (be sure to separate each code with a space) and click OK. Should look like this:
    -noWorkshop -disableMods
  • Close the game's Properties window and launch the game.
