Do you give any items to donald and goofy?
I feel like they share half a brain cell

I've been watching speedrunners do KH for years, and they ALWAYS take potions and ethers off Donald/Goofy. I think there are like a few rare occasions where you give them something? I don't remember exactly, but I tend to feel more safe using my pots when I need them, rather than them using the things as soon as I get hit.

The only time they get items in KH1 is directly before a boss fight. Donald gets exclusively ethers, Goofy mega potions and mega ethers. Donald's repeated deaths will always waste most of whatever you give goofy, so giving him exclusively Megas are the only way to make sure you get some benefit at all. Any other time, nah they can make due without. You're never more than two or three rooms from a save point to full-heal anyway, and even if you find yourself unable to sprint back for some reason you have camping sets and cottages to keep everyone topped up.

They are much more intelligent about item usage in KH2, or at least their AI is programmed to deal with resource management better. Either way I've had no issues with keeping them fully stocked with items throughout the game.

I only give them items on bosses

Goofy is the goat when you equip him with the right gear and i always give him potions before doing boss fights.
Donald will be useless if you don't set his AI to attack frequently because that's the only way to restore mana in the game, and he needs to recharge his mana given the fact that magic is his only way to consistently deal damage. You can also give donald ethers to have him quickly recover mana and keep dealing damage.

Do fiddle with the settings of both characters to see what fits your playstyle best.

Not in the beginning as resources are scarce. Near end-game I'll give them either Hi-Potions or Ethers. Nothing else.

You don't really need to give them items even on proud. but it helps against bosses. It's only The Phantom superboss that it's necessary to give Peter Pan and Goofy Elixirs because that fight requires a LOT of MP for stopping the death sentence timer and just dealing damage. You have to set their AI to only use those in emergencies.

For any bosses I find potentially annoying I will give them items. I'm not going to do so for easy bosses. Just a waste of time. I set them up for the first phase of Ursula, but forgot to do it for the second (even though there's exploring between I also forgot to save~ lol, but I won so it was fine). Ariel and Donald kept each other healed and alive while I beat her face in.

But yeah, I tend to be a hoarder when it comes to items in games. But I will at least stack up for bosses in these games.

Give Goofy MP Share and stock him with Ethers before boss fights and you'll be doing peachy.
Vallard Jun 20, 2024 @ 6:30pm
There are a few boss battles that I will throw items on people for the ninja heals such as Ursala two and final boss gauntlet but generally just keep sora stocked and steal any items that new party members have as soon as they spawn. The AI loves to stand in fire while bathing in hi-potions.
