MoonBase Commander

MoonBase Commander

I can't believe this is on steam.
I mean, good for the developer, but I still remember seeing this in the freakin menards game section. This seems pretty obscure to actually get a delayed digital release.

I would buy it from steam if i didnt still have it collecting dust somewhere in my basement. It is strange it is getting a digital release but it was a great game back then.

The developer (Humongous Entertainment) and publisher (Infogrames) both went out of business a long time ago. The IP license for this game resided with Atari afterwards....and they did nothing with it for the entire time they had control of it. So for the past decade or so, it wasn't possible to sell this game at all (via retail, digital distribution, etc). Rebellion recently purchased the rights to it in an auction after Atari went bankrupt...thus it's availability now on Steam.

Steam will try to sell anything these days look at all the crap in their catalogue, buyer beware.

This game is actually really good imo. Very unique strategy game that didn't get enough attention when it came out. A little bit of simple research on the part of the buyer will always help, so I wouldn't say "buyer beware" necessarily. However, it does need an interface update, the ability to play at modern and non-windowed resolutions, as well as native in-game online multiplayer (rather than using an external utility program to fool the game into thinking it's playing via LAN). But for those looking to have fun with a legacy game (made in 2002) that understand the limitations inherent with such old games, I don't think this game is crap at all.

This game is awesome. I bought it on GMG or some similar site about two years ago and probably put 40-50 hours into it over a few weeks after that, all against the AI. It's easily as good as most recent releases and sadly better than some.

Does anyone know if this Steam version has built in online MP support?

Unfortunately no....still gotta use the external utility program that fools it into thinking it's on a LAN.

This game is worth 5 bucks. If you enjoy slightly challenging casual fun.

Moonbase Commander is slightly challenging? That's like calling Chess slightly challenging.

But is this any different than the GOG release that's been out since, what, 2012?

the game is in a tiny little square in my 1080p TV and I canèt find any way to expand it to an comfortably visible size.
Unless you have a 640x400 monitor or are willing to squint continously I would recommend avoiding this game.
certainly if I had know it would only show up as a tiny little square I would not have bought it or even downloaded it for free.

I have no problem with this game. It is unique and fun, and other than the NiceCo. announcer being annoying, Nothing seemed out of place in the game.

I tried to contact ATARI back in the days because I was interested in a deal for the copyrights. Unfortunately I never got an answer. I had so much fun with this game and some friends.
I can't wait for MBC - reloaded or something as I am sure Rebellion are/or will soon working on it ;)

I'm just so happy that they did release it though! This is like, one of my favorite games of all time.

This was one of our family favorite games for years. New Windows OS made it not work any more. :(

But now it's back. Really bad news is, I was so excited, I bought 4 copies; one for myself, 3 for friends/family. What a shock to find out it does not work via online.

Two of the people I gave it to are in their 50s/60s, and there is NO way I'm going to be able to talk them through all the port forwarding and stuff. DARN!

They really need to write that somewhere on the store page.

If they did some type of remake for this game I'd buy it in a second. On change they'd need to make imo is better graphics, and more point costs than 1/3/7; perhaps 1-8 different points costs.
