Should I get this port, or the Ubisoft PC port?
So, I've bought the Wii version of RE4, and I'm loving it so far. However, I'd also like a native PC version to play on my laptop when I'm bored so I don't need my Wii around just to play this game.

The problem is that there are two PC ports. The first port, released in 2005 or so by Ubisoft (http://www.amazon.com/Resident-Evil-4-PC/dp/B000EPP6UA/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1414881062&sr=8-4&keywords=Resident+Evil+4), and this HD port.

The Ubisoft PC port I hear is pretty meh out of the box (buttons are just referred to by numbers in command prompts, PS2 visuals, cutscenes aren't in real time, no mouse support), but is considered a fairly good port with mods that pretty much fix every issue I just mentioned.

The HD port, however, is much better than the Ubisoft version without any mods, has mouse support, better button command prompts, but apparently requires a decent computer spec wise.

So my question is: Should I get the Ubisoft port, or get this HD port? If you recommend this port, will my system be powerful enought to run it?

My specs:

Model: Toshiba C55-A
Processor: Intel Core i3-3120M CPU @ 2.50 GHz
Installed Memory: 6.00 GB (5.88 usable)
Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics 4000

All I want to do is play the game at a fairly consistent speed. I don't really care about the 60FPS option since that seems to be somewhat broken (and the game wasn't designed to play that way anyway).

Thanks in advance!

Get the Steam version. The advantages of the new Capcom port out weight the advantages of the old Ubisoft port. And the disadvantages of the Ubisoft port are huge compared to the disadvantages of the Capcom port.

But your hardware is not going to run the new Capcom port properly on 60FPS. I can pretty much guarantee that. It might be just enough for 30FPS but it probably will not. Problem is that your CPU is really weak and this is a CPU intensive game. Also the HD4000 is a weak just-good-enough GPU. The new Capcom port probably requires something better.

I read that there are people are working to get mods on Capcom port. At least the actual HD textures are coming.

Also consider that when you apply all the mods to old Ubisoft port then it's going to require a lot faster hardware. And your system will probably not run it properly. Others can comment more on that.

Thanks for the reply Dekonega! A bit of a shame to hear my PC isn't good enough to run the Capcom port, but it's nice to know what people think about it.

Really all I want to do is play RE4 on this laptop with decent controls and a consistent speed. If anybody has any other suggestions or comments, I'd love to hear more!

Decent controls are in the new Capcom port. The Ubisoft port controls are ♥♥♥♥ and even with the fixes they're still ♥♥♥♥. And your hardware will not be able to run the Ubisoft port at decent speeds when you apply all the graphics mods and other fixes that you probably want. That's just my opinion.

If you have the money to buy the game then just test the RE4 Steam version and if it doesn't work sufficiently then get a better laptop. Your laptop is like the lowest of the lowest end.

You should not expect to play unoptimized ports of AAA games. Actually you shouldn't expect to play anything else than AAA games that were made 10 years ago.

Ah well. Thanks anyway.

It's really quite a shame this port isn't a bit more well optimized, but oh well.

I appreciate the responses and your patience with me, however. Perhaps I'll get a better PC down the line.

Why not just get a PS2 or GameCube emulator, (preferably GameCube, even though I think you miss out on some extras) download RE4 and set up a 360 or PS3 controller and go at it? Forcing it to run at your monitors native resolution instead of 480i/p/whatever would make the game look alright without being too straining on your system, I think.

P.S. Resident Evil 4 on the Wii is best port of Resident Evil 4!

He is using a laptop that has a 2.5 clock speed, he is better off playing the PC version than emulating a GC, which will probably lag on his machine (remember that to emulate your PC is running the entire console architecture + the game itself).

Anyway, the RE4 Capcom port is the best IMO, Wii is slightly slugish at some parts plus it has a MUCH lower resolution thant a PC equivalent.

What he could do is just play the old-school Ubisoft port bare bones dry. I.E. no mods at all except for controls and button icons, and that is it. The graphical fideltiy of the game played in it's purest form would be ideal for your pc specs. Your notebook should be able to handle bare bones RE4 with modded controls and icons. Problem solved. I use to have a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ laptop and the game played perfectly that way.

I mean realistically the Ubisoft port looks exactly like the PS2 version. Only you are not emulating a PS2. Any POS pc can run that version of the game. Like I said above me make sure you use mods only for controls and button/kb/m icons. No visual enhancements

I remember how I've played Resident Evil 4 original port on GeForce 6600GT with AMD single core CPU and 2GB RAM and it worked flawlessly, well except for terrible K+M controls and general lack of user friendliness. But once I have successfully set up the gamepad controls and I've copied higher resolution cutscene videos to the ingame folder and I've installed official patch 1.1 it was a truly great game.
Now I was excited for this Ultimate HD Edition but I've tried it on my quadcore CPU, GeForce GTX470 and 4GB RAM and there are ugly slowdowns from time to time, so I will not buy it. Maybe when it'll be for 5€... I'm dissapointed how badly optimized this is.

I would say that if you want to play this game on a hardware with low specifications, buy the old port. The first impression will be probably really terrible, but once you customize it a little bit it works, and it's really not very demanding for your hardware.
Yeah with the Ubi port you can snag that and the lighting update, a controller mod, and have travel.

its far better than ubisoft port

yf you have slowdowns play game at 30 fps. if your pc doesnt manage get all time 60 fps then it will get slowdowns. game has problems at 60 fps anyway
Mythic Voyager Nov 3, 2014 @ 9:22pm
no the game runs fine at 60fps for me, but my comp isn't a pos
metal_hamster Nov 8, 2014 @ 12:04pm
Any genius who can use google knows for a fact... a FACT that the original port is easily one of the worst versions of this game. so WHY would ANYONE even consider buying that POS?
