The shotgun is great for keeping a group of enemies glued to the floor or in a constant stun state. It's the best crowd control besides Krausers arm.
Leon's Blacktail takes out standard enemies very quickly. His only real problem is boss enemies which he has to rely almost exclusively on grenades to deal with.
I will take Leon over Hunk anyday. Chaining kills with melee, while fun and cool, takes way longer than just blowing them away and is pretty dangerous depending on how the enemy staggers. Plus it doesn't even work on the enemies you want it to, like JJ and the Garador. And he has to rely on the TMP.
I've played through mercenaries on many different platforms and Hunk's missions are the only ones I dread. In fact I still haven't done his docks one on steam, just cause I know it can take me around 20+ tries, and his ability to deal with Dr. Salvador is completely reliant on how many grenades you have.
Ada is by default 2nd best, because she has a rifle, and the rifle is the best weapon in the game.
The only boss i had trouble with was the garradors at the castle. Even if ya bait them into swinging and then shooting the plaga as his back is exposed at the end of the swing, it gets tricky when there's two of them. I always save a nade or two whenever i'm at the last stretch of the castle.
I do agree that leon is quite lacking in comparison to the other 4, Then again, the rest are unlocked and leon is the "base character". Just like every other game, base characters are the "well rounded" ones. You can't really go wrong with him.
He just lacks the "specialized" moves/guns that the others have.
