RE4 HD controls are broken
I have two major gripes with the controls in this game that are real oversights and lazy programming.

For users playing on an xbox controller you are allowed to pick from three different “types”. Every type has your "status" bound to the START button and the "map" bound to the (Y) button (the opposite of the original PC port). This is inefficient and cumbersome. Anyone playing this game knows you're going to open your case at least 3-5 times for every time you look at the map. Why are these controls hard coded into the game and not rebindable?

Well let's move past this and use a different controller to play then; the game does allow custom mapping for non-xbox controllers. This works fine except for one major issue. The aiming is on the right stick NOT the left stick as it should be. And once again this is hard coded into the game. You can bind the movement to one stick and the camera to the other. But the aiming is always bound to your right stick, go figure. How did Capcom mess this up? Why even take the time to program a customizable interface for controller bindings but fundamentally switch up how the aiming works.

This is a PC port and the end user should have the freedom to rebind the buttons as they see fit. This is the last time I ever buy a Capcom game for PC, they have no respect for PC users and treat us like degenerate console babies. I've also looked at the input.ini file and I can't make heads or tails out of it.

Why change the controls from the original setup? How is it such a royal pain in the arse to press the start key? I don't get it.... I guess my thumb has hyper evolved.

Last I remember, aiming was on the right stick on the gamecube version too and I think it was like that on playstation. Movement is universally always left and aiming right... Has this ever changed??

Also, Capcom didn't port this. P.S. read reviews in the future.

This is broken and should be patched.

Because human beings are creatures which can make individual choices on personal preference. Do you vote in elections?

This is fascinating I'll refer you to Berkley for DNA analysis.

This is not an FPS game. Aiming should be on the left stick as it is over the shoulder and has discrete movement and aim modes.

Why do the xbox controls and non-xbox controller differ then? Did you even read the OP before going to RE4 defense mode?

Not just that... yesterday, just for comparison I decided to run RE4 (GC version) on dolphin with Xbox360 controller just to see the graphical difference between the versions and for my surprise, the controls on the original GC are immensily more smooth.. specially the right stick... on PC the right stick (move camera around) is almost as if it was a digital pad.. On the GC version the constrols are much more analogic... you can control the camera properly and even the aiming is more fluid and has stronger diagonals....

My gun is on the right side... My aiming is on the right side. Right side is right. My DNA is already at Berkley btw, I am that awesome. Humans don't need choice. You will be peons and buy it anyway. As you have.

Doesn't amaze me on the smoothness on GC though, since it was made for that. I find the controls unsmooth myself.

That is not an excuse, both versions were tested on a PC with the same controller. They should be the same.. there is no reason for the controls on the GC version feels so much better and smooth thatn this new PC version.

have you considered turning off v-sync in the video control panel??? because on default the game is using v-sync. and that's causing input lag.

Nothing to do with lag.. Its the sensitivity mostly. On the right stick, the slightest touch to any side almost makes the camera go all the way... on GC this touch is much more analogic and you have a much more precise control of it.

The same goes to the aiming stick... This is not so bad on the PC version, but you can feel how the sensitivity for vertical and horizontal are different from diagonals... while on the GC everything is more smooth and balanced.

I tested the PC version on both 60fps and 30fps.

This is moving away from my original post. Let me simplify my problem.

When I plug in an xbox controller the controls are okay. Now when I use a non xbox controller the controls are different. I can rebind every function except the aim function. The two controllers have different aiming functions, they should be the same.

Well.. I'm sure every game you played for the past 10 years you had aim on your right stick.. so I don't know why you aren't happy now.

I'm playing with X360 controller and I decided to use the right stick for aiming. As much as I finished this game on GC around 5 times, it was almost a decade ago and I wouldn't want to hold RT to aim, press A to shoot.... I'm playing on option 3. (LT aim, RT shoot and right stick to aim).. it should feel natural to anywone who had play video games for the past decade.

The pc port I own had aim on the left stick. The controls could not be rebound. That is how I played the game. On this version, type 1 controls do the same exact thing. It's fine. When I use a non xbox controller the aim is on the right stick.

The point I'm trying to make is that someone screwed up. Those controls should either be the same or I should be able to rebind the aim function. Why would they change the controls like that? Please explain that logic.

Solutions to your problem and a guide on how to change the configuration yourself if none that are provided there suit your tastes.

Btw. Non xbox controllers don't have types. They are able to be rebound, you just cannot rebind the aim function, which is on the opposite stick compared to type 1&2 xbox controls. Why are you telling me that this is not a problem?
LagMan_pt Mar 7, 2014 @ 5:53pm
I use type 3 settings on the xbox controler, its the one i think its more natural to play with. I do agree it should be rebindable tho, but most console games wont allow it and this is an allmost straight port not a native pc game, metal gear rising also works with the 3 types of button combinations as many other games meant for console. Im just glad they are porting a lot of good console games for pc. Bless steam and willing eastern developers
