Old question: Why is RE4 "Resident Evil FOUR"
This is a question I've been wondering since the original GameCube release of RE4.

Before this title, I've always called Resident Evil Code: Veronica on the Dreamcast (and the PS2's Veronica X) as Resident Evil 4, just as Nemesis carries the Resident Evil 3 title.
Code Veronica was very much a full Resident Evil, playing as RE2's Claire Redfield and RE1's Chris Redfield (much before his boulder punching days).

Is Code: Veronica not considered a part of the main series? Because if Veronica was actually 4, this would make this title RE5, and so on for the other titles.

I know I'm reading way too much into this, but it does bug me. Veronica isn't a side-step in the series at all (like Gun Survivor, Umbrella Chronicles or Revelations), it's a main game in the Resident Evil/Biohazard series.

From what I've heard on the matter during the creation of RE3 and Code Veronica Sony made negotiations with Capcom to make any main story RE titles Playstation exsclusives. Sine RE 3 was so suppose to be a side story and was being developed on the PS and CV on the Dreamcast they simply solved this problem by switching titles. A la nemesis being RE3 and CV being a side story.

That's totally different.
FFX and FFX-2 are connected by the same storyline, whileas each Final Fantasy has a totally different plot with little to no connection to previous titles (FF9 has nothing to do with FF7 or FF8, for example.)

That would hold water if it weren't for the fact that Code: Veronica was a Sega Dreamcast exclusive for a year. The Dreamcast original was out in 2000, and the PS2 Code Veronica X came about just around the the end of the Dreamcast's short lived lifespan.

Which is why they took the 3 out of the title and claimed it as a side story. It stayed within the boundry of the contract without them having to scrap any of their work or develop the titles for the other console from almost scratch.

I guess I can understand that, but this is all just industry rumor right? None of this has actually been confirmed or denied by CAPCOM

That can't be true. RE2 was released on N64 at the same time RE3 was released on PS1. Besides, RE1, RE2 and RE3 made it to PC.... RE2 and RE3 were also released on Dreamcast. Sony never had exclusivity for the franchise.

Pretty much because Capcom wanted it to be named such.

"Three months before the initial release - making it around late June - the name was changed to officially have the number '3' in its name, which project supervisor Yoshiki Okamoto later explained as a means of keeping the titles of the first three games on the PlayStation console consistent"

Short: Code Veranica was originaly planned as RE3, and Nemesis as spinoff. Somewhere during developement they changed priorities, RE Nemesis became RE3 and Code Veronica the spinoff

And therein lies the reason, I assume. I guess they didn't want a numbered title being exclusive to a non-Sony system, where, up until that point, Resident Evil had found its core audience.

The thing went down like this if I can believe my Resident Evil crazy friends...

Resident Evil: Code Veronica is the actual Resident Evil 3. The game that was released as Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was going to be a small side story thing to a Resident Evil 3: Code Veronica.

However Capcom had a limited timed deal with Sony to produce a one more exclusive main-line Resident Evil game for Sony's platform. And while they say that there was certain restrictions about the deal, certain dates they had to meet, and other stuff... the reality probably is that they didn't want to give out the better one of the two games so they switched them around and released. And Sega also made a very good deal for them if I've understood correctly. Nintendo also did similar deal with Capcom (to Capcom-Sony deal) to produce several Resident Evil titles for their system first.

The Resident Evil 4 is Resident Evil 4 because it starts a new storyline that had little to nothing to do with the Resident Evil. Originally it wasn't supposed to even be part of the Resident Evil franchise. They also had lots of issues with the gameplay, story and the design of the game. The project was restarted at least twice where the other restart lead to a game called "Devil May Cry".

Anyway the point is that Nemesis is not part of the main story line and is more of a side story. Code Veronica is the actual main story line title which ends the Raccoon city trilogy portion and was intended to be the "final game" in the series.

And let me add that if I'm wrong. Please correct me. I want to know how it actually went down. I'll probably Google the stuff myself later.

^I'm under the impression that the original Resident Evil 4 was indeed meant to be part of the Resident Evil franchise but they changed and spinned it off as Devil May Cry later. At least, the one with Leon and the haunted ghosts were anyways.
